Fuel Gauge on the outs. Common?
« on: May 16, 2007, 09:52:52 PM »
My fuel gauge has been working on and off lately (that is to say - recently it hasn't worked at all). Kind of adds an edge to taking a long trip.  Has anyone encountered this - is this a common problem with e30s? I figure it's either a short or something to do with the sensor in the tank itself.

This issue of Roundel has an article on the gauge cluster.  Battery in the SI?

hopefully not.  rather not have to pull that board if possible.

hopefully its the sensor in the tank itself.

no one else ever have this happen?

Mine defaults to full due to a bad contact in the dash i believe.
It'll go back to normal most of the time but sometimes starts fluctuating erratically.

I smack the top of the dash above the guage and it usually goes back to normal so it's just an issue of getting in there and cleaning all the contacts off and retighning it all.

mine used to flicker on and off, now it just stays at full.  im positive it is not the fuel level sender because my light still comes on when the tank is empty (i commute a lot and measure mileage).  ive taken the cluster apart quite a few times already, and havent seen any loose or corroded parts, but i can check again soon.  also, we have the newer si boards and our batteries are lithium, but i know they still go out.. my si lights stay red lol even after reseting it multiple times..

oh yea and that smacking the dash thing works, sometimes.  my gauge cluster just sucks =/
