Shadowline trim blows off!
« on: May 12, 2007, 08:35:33 PM »
What the h377?  I was on the interstate tonight and I heard this amazing sound.  Something blew across the roof and sounded like a belt blew off.  Well once I got to the meet someone asks what happen to my trim?

I looked and the trim on the pax side back to the rear vent are was frekkin gone.  Tomorrow I will go look for it on the interstate.

This ever happen to anyone?  Items 1 and 14?

Sorry to hear that.  Just replaced mine on my project car.  The black one's cost  pretty pennie.  I am suprise they flew off that easy those suckers are mounted with clips with some serious grip specially the forward part that runs along the windshield.  You either loosen them up by accident during a wash job or you took the car into a drive through wash or someone was messing with them.

By the way even if you find them on the highway, 9 out of 10 they are all messed up.  I was taking my off to re-aligned them they got messed up just by doing that.  So you can imagine what yours would look like if by a miracle that no on ran them over.  They are aluminum so imagine a beer can being toast around on the interstate then you can picture what your trim would look like.

Thx OT.  Guess I need to order the replacements.  The car just came out of the garage so I wonder if they were accidentially loosened.

Where did you get your replacements from?

I had one come loose - fortunately, I noticed that it was flapping a little before it flew off!  That stinks.

You could try ordering it from BMA - too bad, I just sold a complete set of shadowline trim!  Of course, now that I know how much it costs to ship a box big enough to fit that particular piece in, I would have charged more anyway!  :)

LOL ak.  Dang man!  I guess I'm glad it could have been worse.  They needed to be re-painted anyway.  Why did you sell yours?

The clips look like #13 but are small enough to fit inside the shadowline and snap on the drip rail along the windshield pillar. Someone was showing me how to take them off when I was painting my car and they had rusted so bad they were next to useless. Just as he was saying these are usually hard to get off, they popped out like they were just sitting there. Buy two more clips for the other side also.

I just shadowlined my car and those things were a paint to take off.  I screwed up my driver's side taking them off and it made it damn near impossible to put back on.  Shadowlining was a pain in the ass.

Hey guys! A little bit more optimistic!

That shitty smally parts are needed to be thrown away after You take off the trims. Just buy 2 sets of them in Your local BMW dealer's shop /they costs about 2-3 $ for a set/, than search for the trims on E-bay and buy a spraycan to paint them all ;)

Few hours and You are once more glossy and shiny like new car !

You only need to paint places where the old ones were "sitting" and place twice more of them in the other places.

I've lost mine two times before I realized that BMW dealers shop has every part for my car and some of them for really cheap...

I would not search on the highway... The trim is most likely to be messed up, because the wind rather damaged it...

Seems as though I am not the only one "shadowline-less" at one time or another.  I will be ordering the replacement parts plus extras.  Thanks for all the feedback and help.

I was actually planning a repaint soon.  But I was just going to mask off and paint them in place.

Yeah, I don't think I will go and look on the highway.  Too many tourists and rental cars out there.

When I bought my car it was missing both number 1 and 14, and well, it is still missing them. I'll get around to replacing it but I suppose the same thing happened, any idea how it is installed?

Gonna find out.  Just ordered the replacement pieces today.  Based on the cost for this thin strip of bleck aluminum I think I might use a nail gun to hold it in place!

Dude, I had my car no more than 3 hours from picking it up and the drivers side #1 and #14 in that diagram flew off! i was pissed to say the least,, didn't noticed until I stopped to wash the car, and then figured out wtf that sound was...... Anyhoo, no one will ship them to south dakota, so I've been without ever since :( No parts e30's laying around up here...
Hope the new ones go on smooth for ya,, glue those mofos on with something industrial strength LOL
