Can anyone suggest a good electric fan for me to replace my mechanical fan with. Something slim and high powered for warm weather. Either after market or cannibalized from a different type of car.

If you are looking just to go to your local parts store.  I have a "torqueflow" on all three of my E30, 16" fan.  You can get it from Auto Zone and get the thermostat switch there also, it's adjustable.

Check the junk yards for a volvo 940/960/850 17" 2 speed fan. Get it with the relay. its a 2 speed fan. Very powerful, high quality and quiet. Whatever fan you get, make sure its has curved blades. These are more efficient and quieted than straight blades.

I was thinking a large puller fan behind the radiator could replace both the clutch fan and the small electric aux fan in front.

I had a 16" on last summer, w/100+ degree temp's, and it had no problem keeping it cool. My A/C ran colder also. My temp ran cooler than the factory setup.
