Help me to choose a suspension set for my 318is!
« on: May 06, 2007, 04:00:02 PM »
Well, now  I have done it! I went and bought a track-day car...yes of course, a 318is :D

But I'm totally lost since I have to choose a suspension set which is on the cheap side (meaning no coilovers) but not totally rubbish.

Could you please say that is the suspension of the 318is similar to 325?

It should not lower the car too much, since the current setting it too low for me.

AND, if you look the rims (A-Borbet 9J16) what would be "more normal" rim for a 318is. It seems to be too wide? What Et would be better since the tyres seems to come out too much?

Well I will start off by saying that you have a very nice looking car (with the exception of those wheels) I like the look of the 15" bbs weaves and the alpina kopis, but there are many good options out there... As far as I can tell, the 325 and the 318 have exactly the same suspension, it is only the M3 ans the ix that differ... as far as specifications I do not know, but there is alot of information out there.

Hello,

And thalks for the compliments.

As far as I know atleast the springs are different to 325 since the front is lighter?

You said that there is ålenty of information, but where? I used the search-option and for example I did not find part number for H&R suspension kit or any other set?

I personally recommend the H&R #29964 springs ...or you could go with the newer style H&R 50404 --these pair well with bilstein dampers.

for better handling, more aggressive drop; either IE Stage 3 springs, or H&R race springs

finally, there are a couple of companies (ground control and C3) that make an adjustable coilover kit with adjustable koni dampers and eibach springs set to any rate you want.

You probably have other options in europe, but for us here in the US, the above are common choices.

What class are you going to run in and under what rules. The first step in setting up a track is to read the rule book. Hopefully you won't get into the trap of one or two mods that puts you in with cars that are way faster. NASA Spec E30 seems to be popular. SCCA and AutoX are also good. I didn't know it but E30's dominated in AutoX until the Neons came along.

yes, I'm from Finland ;)

I'm not going to compete any classes even though we have a few classes where e30 could take part. Endurance race and historic race -classes came to mind at first. But it is just for fun.

well, I already bought a 60/40mm lowering suspension set (Weitec). Do you think that the front will drop too low fi you compare it to current set (see picture)?

Now the distance is in front 310mm(12,4") from the fender lip to center of the wheel (which is the correct way to measure ride height) and in the back 330mm(13.2")

Also strongly recommend K-Mac camber plate to dial in extra front negative camber, going to zero or even a slight positive toe, consider R-compound tyres if allowed, and the front 21mm anti roll bar off a convertible. Then get a LSD, good seat and whole heap of tuition.

Is it enough to change only front anti-roll bar? no need to change both of them?

I wouldn't recommend it as I've switched to the 21mm front and immediately noticed a hint of understeer. I recently installed the 14.5mm rear M3 bar and feels alot better now.
