Building my M42, questions
« on: April 29, 2007, 09:32:50 PM »
So my headgasket needs to be replaced, and seeing how its gonna take 527375357 years just to change that, i figured while its all opened up i should build it. I was thinking stroker using the M47 crank, but that thing is expensive, and rare. What other options do I have to build up an N/A motor w/ half decent power? And what would I need to buy? And how much should I be looking to spend? Lol sorry, I'm an engine building noob :P

well, this is your big chance to.... not be a noob!

there are a bunch of threads on, well, this very board, so take a long look through... there are several n/a and f/i projects going on right now, and several that have been completed.

i guess the first thing to do when starting a project is:

- your goals
- your budget (money / time)
- what can you do yourself?
- who can help you?

let us know

Goals- At least 150 RELIABLE whp
Budget- well, i won't be buying everything @ once, so this is kinda flexible I guess.
What can I do myself- I'll get back to you on this one, still trying to get as many tools as possible
Who can help me- I don't know anyone in my area that is willing to help me w/ this

well, you have a couple of different options:

- quality stock rebuild; a newly rebuilt engine with a slight overbore will certainly make a bit more power than what you had in there; throw in a lightweight flywheel, a bit of headwork, you can do well;

later on, you can add a DASC supercharger or homebrew turbo and make a lot of power

- high compression n/a rebuild; using different pistons can raise your compression level, maintain reliability, and make more power

- stroke and bore + cams; I think the M44 crank has slightly longer stroke, I went with the M47 but... it is expensive.

There's more to performance than simply just horsepower, and lets face it, our cars will never be about that.

Having done a high performance rebuild, here are some of the OTHER factors that really make as much a difference for our cars:

- the rev limit; a good stock rebuild, with aggressive cams, quality balanced valvetrain, M50 lifters, new harmonic balancer and new valve springs can let you raise the rev limit a little above 7000 rpms (with a mark D chip)... thats the same as giving you longer gears, and keeps you in the powerband longer.

- intake; I drove around in an s14 with a miller MAF all yesterday... working on the intake --for example an ITB project or a mod similar to my intake manifold makes a BIG difference

- gearing... this also makes a huge difference; hit the junkyards and try to find a small case 4.27 lsd

- driving skill... let's face it.... anybody can drive a fast car slow... but driving a (relatively) slow car fast is a real test of skill, and a rewarding one. Every other car I've ever owned (c280 sport, e46 330i, mk III gti, even my saab) had more torque and power than a stock M42. But I enjoy my car now because I drive much better than I used to.

So, think about your goals and your plans... and your budget. If you really wanna go ahead with yer project. There are a number (at least 8) guys on here who have completed what yer thinking of doing.

Do what we all do; scour our threads, look for answers, PM people who can help you. There are lots of specialty tools you will need, like the cam sprocket holder, valve tools, etc. that folks can loan you. It's a fun wild adventure and this car can teach you more than you realize.

We have a complete factory engine teardown manual in our reference section and you have access to some of the most knowledgeable folks on the planet when it comes to the M42... let's go!!

Thanks alot for your advice. I was looking @ MAF conversion kits online, found one on Miller Motorsports I believe the name was. I was looking @ using an M44 crank, 11 to 1 compression pistons, and refreshing all the gaskets and belts. And get some head work done on it. I've looked around ALOT for info on rebuilding and performance for our engines. I found the sticky to the service manual, but for some reason I can't get it to load on my internet @ home. I looked @ some of the magazine articles and found part one of the GRM article which helped alot. I have another question now though. Is there something that needs to be done to the block to accomidate the higher compression pistons?

no, but typically in a total rebuild you overbore the cylinders slightly to get a fresh liner ready for surfacing (pass the grape shot).

ok, so I have a pretty good idea of what i want to do, just no idea where to get parts. well, I get OEM parts from BMA or Pelican Parts, but as far as performance goes, i haven't got a clue where to start shopping. I know I want 11:1 compression pistions, stronger rods, M44 crank, etc. Where could I get the rods and pistions? And do I need to get different if I use the M44 crank?

Custom rods and pistons are a available from a lot of places;

Jim Rowe at http://MetricMechanic.com --he built my engine, designed and spec'd his own pistons, which are then manufactured by wiseco.

He uses a carillo style rod, there are a number of folks selling hi-strength lightened rods. Carillo, arrow, et al -- other folks can chime in.

Somebody here can chime in re: what length rods you want.
