HELP! M42 Problems!!!
« on: April 20, 2007, 10:25:53 AM »
Hi guys.

To cut a long story short after taking my engine apart to replace the chain  runners etc my car is still making a really nasty noise. (Even after fitting a new tensioner). I have found that the chain is stretched and touching on a bolt & washer - exactly where number 7 is on this diagram.

I therefore need to replace the chain along with both the cam pulleys (4), idler pulley (11)  and bottom pulley (2).

Everything unbolts fairly easily, the outer bottom pulley came off after a while BUT I have heard some horror stories about taking the bottom chain pulley off - number 2.

Has anyone done this before and how?

Some people say it unbolts fairly easily then others say that its a bastard to get off. If I can't get this pulley off then theres no point ordering & replacing the chain or any other components.

HELP!

The crank bolt is what will be most difficult, just leave the car in gear with the e-brake on. Get a good 1/2" lever with a 22mm and good extension and pull until it breaks loose. Make sure you put some wood near any body parts to block you from hitting it with the extension. After it brakes loose then lift the car.

#2 isn't hard, it might be a little stuck, but you can get it off with some light taps of a hammer to a piece of wood.

#12 is a 6mm hex (allen). You'll want a socket wrench type.

It should come off fairly easily if untouched from the factory. My original engine came off easily. My replacement engine was another story as the previous mechanic that worked on it used instant gasket on everything and get this, used some sort of metal epoxy to hold the crank sprocket on. Even with this situation, I managed to get it off with a big pry bar and some persuasion.

As for the crank bolt, the starter method always worked well for me.

Hammer method means you put a block of wood on the body in the engine bay, you then rest the pry bar with the 22mm rested againest it then attempt starting the car. A few cranks should get it loose.

I bent a section of 1/4" angle iron 180 degrees which was welded to a pulley I bolted to the crank.  I ended up cutting off the stock bolt and washer, but only because I was replacing the crank.  My motor was not in the car at the time so I hope you have better luck.
