Random, pictureless update from NYC
« on: April 08, 2007, 03:40:32 PM »
Hi all!

(bmwman91 - pm'ing you in a minute)

Here's a quick, random, pictureless (more about that) update....

- I've been busy as a bee with work and wife-related stuff.
- A rat was hanging out in my engine bay... totally gross. Welcome to the 718 I guess.

- My car is currently at Rohan's getting new rear subframe bushings, stainless steel brake lines, and a ton of tiny fidgety crap taken care of. It's taking awhile for my car because Denis (dude8383) was late bringing his car in. Denis!!!

- Maybe Denis *won't* be a complete weenie and consider holding onto his car; Denis, I know you brought your computer on vacation and if you're reading this, don't sell your frigging car!

- I talked to Mark D. last week; he's been busy with a couple of projects and some other stuff. He's actually headed to Metric Mechanic next week and then after he gets back... hopefully I will be able to start another round of tuning on my engine. I am getting around to picking up an LC1 air-fuel sensor. If someone wants to share the cost with me, let me know via PM.

I'm going to try to get him to do a Q&A for us, and if you haven't bought a Mark D chip, well...

BMWCCA Autocross:

I sat in on an autocross day last week; I took a lot of pictures, which, my friggin CF card devoured. I was vexed. There were several E30 M42s running, including Rohan's, his brother's and nephew's. There are (at least) five (5!!) E30 M42s in Rohan's immediate family. I was too late to make the tech inspection to run.

Rohan himself has a 4 door M42, and a 2-door M42 awaiting a pretty whompus swap (hint: engine code starts with S, ends with 4).

The head of the NYC BMWCCA chapter, Andre Noel (a *very* classy dude) ran the session and rocked his red E30 M3 around the cones. Boy, this post would have been better with pictures. rrrrrrrrgh. Anyway, the E30s, in all their varieties, did well and looked good --M20, M42, S14s.

Oh yeah, Andre, he just completed an M20 to M42 swap on his E30 daily driver! So our numbers have grown by 1; or at least, stayed even. Maybe his new M42 came from an E36... I am also trying to set up a q&A with him too.

As it gets warmer, we're going to try to do some more get togethers. I also saw Jay and his cousin Roy (with their red and white M42s), and if Jonas can stop playing world of warcraft or whatever he will bring out his freshly painted M42 too.

I guess if you live in queens and are philippino or south asian by way of guyana,... well, odds are, you drive an E30 M42.

Other stuff:

Is anyone rocking out to the new Swizz Beatz single?
http://swizzbeatzonline.com/

Work is off the hook busy... but if anyone wants some free CDs please let me know what kind of music you like and I will send some over. Priority will be given to folks who donated to help Doc Sheepdog out with loot to cover his costs. So, give a little money to the club, write me and get a munchload of CDs.

Finally, New York and other tri-state peeps please chime in. We have some stuff coming up and wanna make sure we know who's who.

It will be fun. I will make sure to get a new CF card before the next meet.

Don't even get me started on WoW. Everyone at school plays it and no one has a life anymore. Crack? yup, purty much.

BTW must say I've never heard of an m20 to m42 swap; usually its the other way around. Sounds like fun ;)

OK, enquiring minds want to know.

How is that engine?  Any regrets taking it to MM?

I'm saving for my rebuild...

hey!

The engine is great... and as far as regrets... none. Having said that, the day we pretty much finished the install, the DASC edition of Grassroots Motorsports showed up at the house...

I think for most of us, the price / DIY / performance aspect of the DASC makes it tough to beat. I think there is some combination of supercharging and quality rebuild that is a winner all around. Hopefully one of us will figure it out sooner than later. I would love to test drive a DASC equipped car.

(DENIS!!! Get on that!!)

Anyway, the MM engine screams, but you really have to stand on it to feel the magic, so to speak. Which, suits me fine. When I lay off the throttle I'm like any other fuel efficient M42 (As I live in the 718, I spend a lot of time in traffic or in situations where any engine is pretty much wasted) but getting on the throttle is a joy.

At some point (god willing) in the next year 18 months I'm going to (finally) get out of the city and move upstate a bit, so I'll be able to enjoy the car more.

Local fuzz... can you hear me now?

My plans exactly, quite honestly: ~mild rebuild and a DASC.  May as well, I've got so darned much money in this thing doing little repairs and such that there is no hope I could sell it for anywhere near what I have in it. Not that I would sell it anyway!!

I'm with you on the traffic - I live in the middle of the DC-Baltimore-Annapolis triangle and work in Alexandria VA, on the other side of DC!
