Timing Off???
« on: April 05, 2007, 08:10:24 PM »
I can't tell if my timing is off or not. The bentley say the cams are suppose to point towards each other and the arrows are supposed to be point up (relative to the motor).

So is my timing off

iirc in the last pic the right cam's bolts should be in line with the left. Having never rebuilt my motor I'm not sure, but I found a pic out of the Bently online:

EDIT: this is the VANOS engine.

I just put in new cams yesterday .  Do you have the tool that aligns the cams together that sits on the back of the cams ? and the arrows on the sprokets should point up perpendicular to the motor .  Installed mine like this and it runs great . Does it seam like your timming is off ?  Did you turn the crank back to tdc before putting on the timming chain ?

Timing Off???

Well my timing was off. The intake cam was off by one tooth. That also was my loud ticking sound. I think one or more of the valves was hitting the piston(s). I also replaced my timing chain as I found a crack in one of the chain plates. All done now and the motor runs great! Now to fix the trans not going into gear.

wow, I'm surprised it even ran.  You should probably do a compression/leakdown test.  It's possible you had some valve/piston contact.  Hope you didnt bend any valves.

Well the motor runs great and very quite. Compression came out 220 (1), 215(2), 215(3), and 235(4).

I will probably do a leakdown next weekend.
