5 lug hub for E30
« on: March 28, 2007, 01:32:49 AM »
Hello everyone,

I have been looking into doing a 5 lug conversion for my E30. Mainly due to the choice of wheels(and some mods i plan for the rear end at a later date). I am currently looking at the front end however, where from what i have been reading the most work is required. I decided on a completely different route from what all the websites tell you to do, however i need some assistance. My plan is to design a 5 lug hub that bolts in place of the E30 4 lug hub. Although for this to be possible i need a few parts to take measurments from so i can determine a suitable package.

What i am currently looking for is:

E30 front hub - to get initial dimensions from.
E30 Brake disk - Just an old on
E36 Brake disk - again an old one will do
E36 brake caliper

Currently i am obvioulsy looking at using E36 brakes, however i have heard that E28 brake callipers bolt straight into place of E30 calipers and allow for a greater disc diameter.

However i dont have sufficient information on this, if anyone does it would be usefull also any information on the E36 setup for disc diameter etc will also be usefull.

If you do have parts you are willing to donate to the cause please message me. They dont have to be new or in perfect condition, any old part can help. I am in Australia so as far as sending parts goes it may apply to those who live here more.

Thanks

So you are planning on designing and fabricating a new hub instead of going with an E36 hub?

Despite common misconception, there are plenty of 4x100 wheels available in many sizes and offsets now. That is one reason to save your money on a 5-lug conversion.

The second to not do it is the availablity of moderately prices Big Brake Kits. The only two reasons you would "need" 5-lug is the better brake components and wheel selection. Now it becomes a question of you "wanting" 5-lug for the fuh-raze factor.

4-lug is weight savings, period.

Wheel choice whilst is part of my motivation it isnt completely. I have a set of 16" Hartge wheels currently. More of a project for something extra for my car, manufacturing and design are not problem at all. I did mention wheel choices not being a major motivation however in Australia decent 4x100 are not extremely easy to com by and do sell for abit when they do come up. But a set of 16" E36 or E46 wheels in perfect condition sell quite frequently on ebay for $300-$400Au by people who prefer to have big chromies on their cars.

I have read alot of articles by people who do conversions and you will find that most people doing a conversion use E36 M3 struts, I don't want to replace struts or suspension as I have already put money into Bilstiens and H&R springs. I want to design a replacement hub to use perhaps E36 brakes along with the correct and common size offset wheels.

I dont believe that E36 hubs are a direct swap to use into an E30.

I just need parts to get sizes and dimension from to place everything in the right spots, basically so i can find if there is a combination that makes it possible.

My 4X100's came from Speedy in Australia. They were $600 here in the US. 17" chrome in the correct offset. If you save $200-$300 a set on wheels you are still in the hole on a $1000 (at least) 5 lug conversion.

Unless you have all of the parts sitting there, then it's not worth it.  I spent a total of $200 doing my conversion, but that's because I had a bunch of spare parts off of my 2 E36's.  And also, I'm a fluke because my alignment came out perfect... better than stock.  Again, it's not worth it for the price.
