LSD pricing question
« on: March 21, 2007, 09:04:50 AM »
Guys, I might have access to a 4.27 small case lsd, and am very interested in getting it, but have a question as to what the right price to pay for it would be?  I was thinking maybe $350?  Any suggestions and does anyone else have one and if so how much faster is the car and how is it at highway speeds 80-90.

Thanks,

Nick

Korman suggests a 4.45 for the 318is.  Not sure how much it would effect  your accel or highway.  I wouldn't pay over 250 for a small case lsd personally.  A med case will be a lot stronger.

Thanks for the info, I have heard that the 4.45 is a little all out and revs would be high for daily driving, so i was thinking the 4.27 would be a nice compromise.  Thank god for m42 club, and people with the same car.

I guess i will keep looking (passively) for one thats a med case.

Me personally id go with a 3.91 or 3.73 even stock.  With a  4.27 or higher you going to get 10ft and have to shift to 2nd then like 40ft farther shift to 3rd… but I guess I’m running 12 PSI of boost too but still.

I say buy it.  $350 is reasonable as that's a fairly rare gearset.  If you want a medium case that's fine, but it would be overkill and you'll never find a gearset lower than 4.10 for less than $500.  The S14 racers eat those things up.

has anyone broken their small case diff yet?  How much power does it take?  I know plenty of 2002's running over 200whp with no drivetrain problems.

I paid €400 + p&p for mine 4 years ago (4.10). They are getting rare these days, so pay dependant on mileage/condition.

Ratio's such as 3.91-4.45 do not make a huge amount of difference one way or the other. To me, the advantage with going with the shorter diff is that it closes the gear ratios up a bit.

The small case doesn't seem to cause problems if kept well lubed. The big diff is heavier too.

If the LSD is in top condition with <100k miles, then I think $350 is a good price.

Thats exactly what im looking for I like it with a 4.1 but if the gears were a little closer it would be great, especially in 2nd and 3rd.  I figure if i can get it a little closer and get a lsd to replace my open life would be good.  This guy wants $450 so i have asked to see pictures and get all info he has on it (mileage and condition).  I still dont think i'm willing to pay more then $350+shipping.

Thanks again for the help guys.

It's a great pity that there isn't a close ratio gearbox available like there was for the 325iS. 2nd to 3rd is quite wide, and 4th could come down a bit too.
