hey all i am looking for a chip for my 1998 318i and most the chips out there are for older years what years will fit my car or will anby of them thanks

you will need one for the m42.  The early 318's had the m10.  There are quite a few chips out there for you to choose from.  The "best" is the markD chip according to most people.  Thats going to run you above $200 new.  The cheap route is the ebay chip.  Thats a road that seems to be pretty controverial [spl?].  I personally have one in my car since it came on the car when I bought it.  But I also have the stock chip and I deff like the ebay chip over the stock one.  I will be installing MS soon so I will have that up for sale sometime.

ummm....I'm not sure about the e36 m42 chips?  Maybe someone will chime in

You're better off verifying via TMS, Bavauto or any vendor who sells chips for e36 m42s. Just call them and make sure you know if you have an m42 or m44 in your car. If you don't know which engine you have, have your vin # ready when you call them or simply check on http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do by entering the last digits of your vin as instructed where it shows serial number

you said your car was a 98 right? that should be obdII wich means you are going too too be looking for somebody to reflash your ecu.
