So I got my chip today...
« on: March 31, 2006, 02:14:13 AM »
Purchased one of the infamous fleebay chips--IInd Gen Pro Formance. Can't wait to install it and share the results. The seller has nearly flawless feedback and many people were very satisfied with the results. Also, if I don't like it I can simply return it! Pretty solid deal if you ask me. Mk-Ultra over at e30tech has one on his car.

Mk-ultra--are you here as well?

I am sorry to say but that chip wont be worth the time of installation. I speak from experiance, I purchased one and then went and bought one from Mark D.

I purchased one of those about a year ago too. Its sitting on my desk in front of me as we speak. According to the seller, they are Dinan replicas. Anyone wanna buy it from me? I had it in for a day and decided to keep my Jim C chip instead.

So essentially, it's like comparing a Dinan chip to a MarkD chip, right? And there seems to be a big following for the MarkD chip in our community, hence the reason for you guys keeping the MarkD.?

I hear that the chips provide very similar power figures, but that the MarkD is "smoother." At this point in time that alone doesn't justify the $200 price tag($40 VS $200). I really want to make some dyno comparisons and give you guys some actual figures.

Thanks for your responses. I would like to know what kind of diferrences you experienced when installing the MarkD. Thanks.

bimmahVA--Since, my chip is a supposedly a copy of a Dinan, that's my question as well. I highly doubt that there is a drastic difference, but that's what I'm trying to clarify. Even if it is a little better, as I stated earlier, I feel like I got a fantastic deal--only $40 shipped!!

When someone sits in your car/drives it without knowing that you swapped the chip and they comment on how the car pulls much better/smoothly, you know you did a good mod...in my case; my good buddy is my guinea pig for lots of changes. I just tell him to drive the car and he often comments instantly either due to the change in handling, braking or performance.

so how come i see half the people with a "pro formance' chip say it was noticeable and the other half say they threw them away and got 'real' ones?

i remembered reading this, then found it and saw it was from the same person..
Quote
Also, a buddy of mine bought an ebay chip by the name of "pro formance" for his 325is a couple years back, and actually saw a 12-15hp increase (can't remember) on the dyno. His rev limiter was bumped up to 7g's and he was very, very pleased with it. I know a lot of people are like, "Stay away from, ebay," but I will make my car the guinea pig for our cars and let you all know. And it's only 35 bucks!!!

does your buddy have a dyno sheet from before/after to vouch for the 12-15hp? i dont care if it is a little 'rough'  or not as smooth of a torque curve or whathaveyou if its 40 bucks for 15hp...

///Motorsport--My freind has since sold his car, but he had no reason to lie to me. I never saw the actual dyno-graphs, and unfortunately I only rode in his car after he had installed the chip. In other words, I never got the chance to actually feel the change myself.
Regarding your comment about half the poeple saying the chip is great and others saying they suck, I believe people just want to support forum sponsors, purchase authentic products(as opposed to copies), and it seems that some people have gotten ripped-off in the past by eBay sellers. JimC, MarkD, Dinan etc. can be reached easier for tech support and their products come from one source, which is widely known by many people. I guess, ultimately, it has to do with reputation--one never knows what one is getting when purchasing on eBay from some relatively obscure seller.
I will install my chip tomorrow and actually take some video of my 0-60 runs to show you guys what happens.

P.S. Here's what 2002maniac over at R3V said a couple months ago while selling his:

"I used this chip for about 5 months and it did make a difference. Eventually curiosity got to me and I bought a MarkD chip. The MarkD chip feels smoother but power feels about the same."

Ahhhhh!!!!! Was going to drive down to Santa Cruz ( I live in SF) to install my chip at my mom's and then test out the chip, but it's pouring and I gave up the idea. I'll have to do it some time this week though. I always drive to my mom's  (1hr 15min/30min drive) to work on my car because she has a sweet garage with a lot of my stepdad's tools :). I don't even have a parking space here in the city!! Also, I know some nice long and flat straights, where I can do some nice acceleration runs. I'll keep you guys updated.

PS Where can i get some video hosted?

My ebay chip seemed to induce a bump in torgue at 4 k or so.  Try to evaluate, at least subjectively, the before characteristics of the acceleration process.  Have you ever hit the stock rev protector?  I have not.  I don't knoe if it kills all spark or what....  But try to notice the before.  Mine seems better, but maybe I should reinstall the stock one and check it out.

^^^^Yeah, apparently 4k and up is where most aftermarket chips exibit the most power on our cars. Ha, ha. Definitely have hit the stock rev limiter--@6500. The car just kind of bogs down very quickly. I will be taking some video of my acceleration runs, since I can then go back and actually get accurate times--from the moment the clutch is released, to the moment I hit 60.

yep, I bought the chip off of 2002maniac and can vouch that it did make a noticable change in power. I can feel it pull much better up top and I love the higher revs.
