Here you have some details:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
S 42 details:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some interesting data on the S42 (Version: 08/1995):
* Stroke = 85mm
* Bore = 86.5mm
* Compression ratio = 12.4:1
* Total displacement = 1.997ccm
* Rod length = 145mm
* Inlet cam = 312 degrees (spread: 94) (Eö=40, Es=48 (@ 2mm lift) )
* Exhaust cam = 304 degrees (spread: 98) (Aö=45, As=28 (@ 2mm lift) )
* Inlet Valve diameter = 35mm
* Exhaust valve diameter = 32mm
* Inlet port metrics: W=52mm, H=29.7, Radius=14.85mm
* Slide throttle diameter = 46mm
* Header = 4-2
* ECU = ECU4A.1
* Power DIN 70020 = 285PS / 207kw @ 8300rpm
* Torque DIN 70020 = 245Nm @ 7000rpm
* Max rpm = 8500rpm (FIA regulation "SuperTouring")
* Gasoline quality = Super Plus (Oktan min. ROZ 98)

Regulation says that fuel must be commercial petrol which comes from a service
station pump, without any additive other than that of a lubricant on current sale.
The fuel must be approved by the ASN and must have the following characteristics:
102 RON and 90 MON maximum, 95 RON and 85 MON minimum for unleaded.
100 RON and 92 MON maximum, 97 RON and 86 MON minimum for leaded fuel.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The engine changed a lot in it's life cycle, where it eventually ended up on a aloy nicasil engine block, this is a indicator of how competitive the series was.  However the first versions was on a cast iron block.

Also the entire cooling system was "re-wired" to a cross-flow design, where it had a distribution pipe below the intake ports which sends coolant directly to the individual cylinders. The path on a standard engine is different, it goes through the block first and then to the head.

The oil system is is a drysump setup.

These parts are the same, from memory (S42 (Version: 08/1995)):
 * Oil squirters
 * Crank sprocket
 * Cam sprockets
 * Chain
 * All the guide- and tension rails
 * The cam bearingledges caps (which tells me that you could fit the cams on the stock head) in other words the cam bearing diameter is the same.
 * Cylinder head bolts
 * Main bearing bots

I have some more info on it but it's in paper form, but nothing really interesting only tightening torques, partnumbers and some diagrams, and technical data..

The info comes from BMW papers which i got my hands on a couple of years ago. But as i said above. I posted the most interesting data above, the rest is just a bunch of partnumbers, diagrams, tightening torques, and technical specifications. Interesting bed-side reading but really nothing a hobby builder on a budget can use for anything important (my opinion).

It's worth looking closer at the inlet port data, try compareing this to a standard port.. And you will see that the port entrance is pretty much the same size, of cource the deeper port on the S42 is machined for flowing more air. But i think this shows that the M42 has good potential to be a fun engine.
