I was driving the car around for one week then car started vibrate and click very loud so I checked the oil and it needed to be changed bad. I changed the oil and used a 4cyl oil treatment and fuel injector cleaner, the motor sounds good but I still hear the loud clicking when I start it and when the car is fully warmed up like after a short drive the engine sounds like crap but it idles fine. Im thinking it could be a lifter that is broken? or my injectors are going bad...help me out here guys.

My mechanic thinks that it could be one of my lifters becuase I used and engine flush on it and maybe some kind of carbon deposit or something broke loose and is making it sound like that.

Not sure. Is the sound coming from the timing case? Front of the engine?

check your oil pressure. it also could be your timing chain tensioner.

Ok well i pulled the valve cover off poureda little oil on the cams and put everything back on and the noise went away...wierd:confused:

Definitely sounds like an oil pressure problem, or lack there of specifically as the long run issue.

Pull the pan and check for debris! (bolts)

if you hear clicks sometime, and sometimes not, probably are bad lifters.

I would try replacing the hydraulic tensioner for the timing chain. Odds are that its never been done and they are known to fail and make a lot of noise.

Its a 45 dollar part from BMW, make sure you get the one from the 1.9L z3 engine. Its the "updated" part.

If that doesnt take care of it I would take a screw driver and hold the handel end up against your ear and put the other end on other parts of the engine and see if you can tell where the ticking is coming from.

So I have a question. What if I have replaced the timing chain tensioner and I still have the rattling noise between 3000 and 5000 rpm. It doesn't change the way it runs, but it is extremely irritating as it sounds cheap....Does this mean a timing chain replacement? I just bought the 1.9 Z3 tensioner and am going to re-replace and see what happens.

I know this probably doesn't help your problem but with my car, it was loud as shit when I bought it, but I replaced the 5W-20 with 20W-50 and replaced the tensioner and the car has quieted down a ton. I used to get a lot of noise on my first loading of the engine when leaving for school in the morning but after 20 seconds it would quiet a little, my car now is quiet at start up and purrs with no extra noise with load. Just a thought.

If that is the case, then start collecting parts to refresh the timing chain, sprockets and possibly guides. I means your chain and sprockets are severely worn.
