Author Topic: Bad Guibo (Read 4976 times)

I was driving down the road the other day and heard 2 thuds that came from the rear floor board and didn't really think anything of it. When i put the car on the lift I saw that the guibo had come apart. Has anyone had an experience like this? Keep in mind also, the guibo only had around 1000 miles on it.

Was it... A Febi Guibo?

um, i hope it wasn't ...but the other issue is: did you use new guibo bolts? That makes a difference, oddly enough.

It is a Febi, And yes, I did use new bolts.

Wow if this was a new guibo, with new bolts, this is very serious. Did you drive through any chemical waste or something? Is there damage anywhere near underneath the car? How about damage to the drive shaft?

No damage underneath the car, but I an replacing the drive shaft and CSB for safe measures,

is the prop in balance (on the correct spline etc)? This could presumably cause it to rattle itself to bits. What's the centre bearing like?

The splines are right, I mark them when I take them apart, The CSB was replaced when the guibo was replaced about 1000 miles ago.

I have to ask even though it sounds like you know what your doing.
Did you do the preload thing and were there little arrows on the guibo pointed in the correct position??

It looks to me that the guibo had a hairline crack in it and eventually came apart (like ripping one side of a doughnut) causing it to widen out and smack any nearby parts. But of course I bet you already knew that.

I'm thinking that could have been what happened, or an unbalanced or bent drive shaft, because in the couple weeks before there had been a slight vibration when I was accelerating that got worse with time..

this is an old thread, but I know what happened.. you put it in backwards. it has to be oriented a certain way.. don't ask me how I know!

Yeah, it does have to be oriented a certain way, thats why there's arrows on the sides of it, they're supposed to point toward the ear of the flange

I just had that happen to my car. its back in the shop now to get it fixed for free because the shop failed to 1. tighten the driveshaft bolts (two of them just fell off somewhere) and second probably put it on incorrectly. envitablely the one bolt that was holding the driveshaft to the tranny pulled out of the guibo and messed up the shifter. I am pretty sure that if you did everything that you were supposed to have done then it was prolly just a part failure. If it does it again then something is off. My driveshaft is prolly way bent from it or unbalanced and if you had a lot viration prior to removing that guibo i would check your driveshaft over to make sure its still balanced.
