Look what the UPS man brought today!
« on: February 09, 2007, 09:35:29 PM »
OK, so I have a stock engine...  I haven't even installed the 93-octane Mark D chip I bought through the GP months ago!  But...  I replaced the exhaust a few years ago, and it will need replacing this summer again, probably. For the money, assuming I keep the car forever and ever, this is saving me money!

At least, that's what I told my wife!  :D

This is almost too pretty to put under the car!

Mind you, it's about 27 degrees when that picture was taken - the gloves went on right after.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to put it on this weekend!

Noice!! I see it listed at a little over $800. Is that what you paid for it?

No, there was a GP through one of the other car forums that I barely snuck in on (like the last hour when I found out about it) from T Byrne Motorsports for around $650.  This was not a BMW-specific GP, but I called and he said I could order any B&B Triflo, so I did.

I replaced the exhaust when I bought the car, about 40k miles ago, and it is starting to show it's age - I would likely have to replace it again later this year.  I did some math, and figured that if I own the car as long as I plan to, it was worth spending the bucks to get an exhaust with a lifetime warranty.

It's pretty, too!  :)

It's on!

Relatively straigtforward install, but I can't get the tip lined up perfectly in the back - it keeps wanting to ride towards the driver's side, rubbing against the rear valance. Which is pretty much exactly how the stock system rode.

I'm working nights all next week, so week after next I will scout out a local shop that can weld stainless and have them weld it up. They should be able to get the tip properly centered. The band clamp they provided works, but it's not as tight as would like it to be.

Camera battery died in the process of taking pics, so I will get some today, I hope, after I get my snow tires mounted.

Sound is not that different from stock, actually - I'm a little surprised. A slightly deeper tone, but not raspy at all.

I think the only thing I don't particularly care for is how far out the tip comes from under the bumper. It doesn't look bad, it just comes out further than I prefer.

I think it's too early to judge how it sounds. Give it a few hundred miles to be broken in.

I put it on, but that's the -is lip spoiler. The car had the -i spoiler when I bought it, but after the damage last year from the tow (make sure they secure both ends when they flat-bed your car, not just the front.  Brakes + oily flatbed truck = new valance/hood/radiator core support/paint) I replaced it with this one. Looks much better, and I am somewhat surprised that after several months of driving on the crappy roads around DC I still haven't scraped it!

Eurospec, I agree, it needs to break in a bit - it definitely sounds deeper than stock, though, which is what I was after.

Thanks for the compliments! I should probably put better pics of the car up somewhere, once I get them!  :)

Oh, and no clips yet - I spent the little free time I had yesterday putting the snow tires on in preparation for the 'big storm' heading up the coast at us.

I'll get something done next weekend.

So purdy and nice to see that they even retained the flat spot on the exhaust tubing.

This reasoning or design flaw, however you wanna look at it, reminds me of the Audi/VW intercooler pipes. If you ever seen factory ones, you'll know what I'm talking about...

hmmmmm 30 degree exhaust installs.....

believe me, I KNOW what you're in for.  Oregon weather kills my install desire.

Way to go on the exhaust, I wanna hear it.
