diesel noise at start up
« on: February 07, 2007, 10:14:36 AM »
my car sounds just like a diesel at start up before it warms up to operating temp. From what I've been able to research, sounds like I need to refresh the timing chain and related components. Just wondering if anyone else has heard this noise too? It goes away once the car warms up and also above 3000 rpm. Car runs like a top, btw.

what temperature is it outside? My car sounds like a diesel when it starts too but it's -20 degres celsius outside...it needs some time to get the oil up into the head and into the lifters. Then again it has 230 000km so maybe it's just old lol It doesn't make the sound when it's cool or hot outside.

Have you replaced the timing chain tensioner? That might solve your problem.

haven't done a darn thing to the car since I bought it, so I am going to replace at least the tensioner. Is it adviseable to replace sprockets, guide rail, etc?
temp BTW is about 40*f,

If you're only dieseling at startup, I would pull your lower pan and make sure there is nothing blocking the oil pickup area. Does your dieseling coincide with the amount of time your oil light stays on during startup?

Thanks
