Seeking advice on noisy lifters
« on: February 15, 2021, 08:30:56 AM »
Hi all,

My 1991 318i convertible's lifters are getting noisy.  It's got about 235,000 miles, the engine runs smoothly, STILL doesn't burn oil, has good compressions....otherwise still a pretty nice engine.  I've had the car about 12 years and the lifters have always been noisy at start-up.  They would tap for a few seconds and then quiet down.  Over the last couple of years the tapping has gotten longer and longer now taking up to 4 or 5 minutes to pump up.  Despite my wife encouraging me to replace the engine I still feel that it has some life left and I could probably get another 50,000 miles out of her (which at 3500 miles per year would be another 14 years....well into my retirement) if I just fix the lifters.

What's your opinion?

If doing the lifters, what other parts should I replace while I'm in there?  ....such as timing chain and tensioner?

What special tools should I be looking for?

Thanks for your replies!

If the noise is definitely them, then a replacement is the correct options, but a change of oil brand or weight, can possibly quiet them. Also pay attention to any leaks, as the change can introduce them or make it worse. I have about the same miles (233K)on mine. Engine has been rebuilt but still original lifter and while I can hear them, it is not obnoxious and with engine close, more muffled. If they are not too loud then keep enjoying it until it is time for a full refresh.

If you still have the problem try adding Liqui Moly hydraulic lifter additive.
