Hello from Canada - Question re:Fuel Issue
« on: October 18, 2020, 03:18:28 PM »
Hi All - just joined the forum. Picked up a 1991 BMW 318i this summer as a project car and have been working on it for months.

The body work is done and engine is running good, with one persistent problem. Leaking fuel from the injectors. Replaced all 4 injectors with Bosch 62417 injectors and have had nothing but problems.  The car will run fine for a while and on startup, the O rings would be exposed and fuel is gushing out.

Now I’m thinking the fuel rail or fuel pressure regulator may be the problem. If anyone has the fuel rail with injectors they want to sell, I would be interested to see if that will fix the problem.

Also be interested to hear anyone has experienced this before.

Thanks all

Welcome!

Sorry to hear about your problems. Off the top of my head, are you sure injectors those are the right length? There are two different length injector bodies from what I've seen. If you're using the short versions, they'll pop out of the manifold.

I couldn't find a specific spec sheet for those injectors, do you have the full Bosch part number handy?

Alternatively, I guess you could try to shim the injector tips with an extra plastic spacer...

When you say fuel is gushing out, do you mean that liquid fuel is squirting out up at the top where the injectors plug into the fuel rail, or is it that there is some sort of overspray/weeping occurring down where they plug into the manifold? If they are leaking up top, then you may just have incorrect o-rings. Is it one injector, or all of them? Did you reinstall the metal clips that secure the injectors to the rail? Those are essential, otherwise the fuel pressure will pop them out of the rail and you'll have a fine mess.
