Hey. im obviously new to this forum. my buddy is thinkn about purchasing a 318 and were gonna start up a small race team together. that leads me to my question. wut parts are different on a 318 from a 325. (suspension compnents, brakes, etc.) thanks

E30? Suspension and brakes are essentially the same (maybe minor differences in original factory spring and shock rates and ARB diameters but both use 51mm front strut housings.). Differential is small case (6 bolt) on 318i/s and medium case (8 bolt) on 325i.

Where are you located and what year 318 and 325 are we talking of.

Reason for the questions are - the US/Canadian market got a different offering of 318i 2 door and 4 door versions with the m10 in 1984/5.
We then got the m42 318i and 318iS. Same applies to the 325i/iS versions we got here in the states.

Suspension wise - a lot is the same between the m42 cars and the 325 cars. Major difference is the differential, we got the small case and the 325s got the medium case.

What exactly are you referring to when you say "race?" What sanctioning body will you be going with and what kind of racing will you be doing?

were just autoxing with a local car club here in north carolina. jus curious to see if we could do some cheap swaps for a little performance help. just for fun kind of stuff. just curious

I auto-x my 318iS. I actually did the last season with an open diff, Falken RT 615 Azenis, Koni SAs, Ground Controls.

Auto-x involves a perfect match with the driver and the car they sit behind. Know the car with the basic mods, good rubber and you're good to go. No need to go swapping stuff just for the sake of trying to be competitive. I don't know if you're going to run with the BMWCCA or SCCA but it's all relative to the reason you run. Trying to win? Trying to be a better driver while having fun is what I do. I have to say all e30s are fun in auto-x. I have used a stock motor eta with an open diff, a 318iS with an LSD, a 318iS with an open diff and they all provide the challenge I seek.

This season I'll be using my 318iS with the BMWCCA and my 325i in STS or DSP with SCCA as the 5 lug swap on the 318iS puts me in SM :rolleyes::eek: if I were to use the 318iS with the SCCA

SM down here is killer. No thanks - I like to pace myself against logical competition. SM is annihilation :eek:
