Hi there!

My first post here so allow me to introduce my car

It's 1994 BMW E36 318is Class II homologation special, sold atleast in germany and italy. 2500 produced to homologate sedan bodyshell with 16 valve engine (you guessed it, M42) to be used in FIA Class II (BTCC, STW, Italian and French national series and also in far east).

Bodykit is from factory and similar to E36 M3 GT and it was used without modifications on race cars (check the last image). I already have the riser blocks to rear wing but they are not yet installed

I use the car on wintertime when my E46 M3 is in storage (too cold and slippery to use it in Finland) and also on track during summer.

I plan to modify the engine to produce about 160 hp this summer (chip, reground cams, fan delete, throttle body modification, stiffer valve springs, lighter hydro lifters). I aim to get 180 at some point, I'm not sure what will be the exact setup yet.

Car will be lightened a bit for this summer, spare wheel and everything else on trunk will go, bike battery will replace full sized battery. Also dualmass flywheel is going to be replaced by lightened M40 unit.

I already have spare set of M42 cams and injectors with rail and E34 540i M60 MAF. I am now bidding on complete M42 head on ebay to be used as basis for mod work. I hope to put M60 35 mm inlet valves to it (will they fit? I have to order one to measure it I guess), modify inlet tract and all the valves to have 3 angle edges. Compression could be increased to around 11:1. Intake most likely will be custom job using 4 liter M60 throttle body. Lots of things to do and it will be few years before all is done I think.

I also ordered new set of wheels for summer, they are similar as in those photos but 17" instead of 16" and they are staggered setup having 225 front and 245 rear. No moer fear of oversteer on fast corners I think :p

No, by default a 318is is a 2 door. But theres not a lot of difference between the 318i and 318is besides the 2 doors, m-tech interior, body kit and suspension. Since his car is a special homologation editon, he already has all those so I guess that's why it's called a 318is.

Very nice car, I had no idea they made those. Do you have the standard 140bhp? Most (almost all) race E36 I've seen used the 4 door body....is it lighter then the 2 door or more rigid or something??

Can you explain the option you have, '960 Steering angle limitation'? Some people in this club have been discussing different steering racks and perhaps that option might explain the difference between some racks (I'm guessing).

Australia received 4-door 318is sedans briefly in 1997, but they were M44 and manufactured in South Africa. My next car perhaps?

I think that options is for wide tyres (225) so they will not rub on max steering lock. I do not know how it is implemented to car...

4D sedans got 140 hp M44 in 1997 when E36 was being phased out and it needed help to boost sales. They were sold atleast in UK and Germany and it seems that in Australia too

Before that 318is Class II 4D sedans were only E36 sedan with 16 valve engine (outside US) and it was produced briefly during spring and summer 1994. Coupe was always available with some 16 valve engine (M42/M44).

I think all 318 4D sedans sold in US have M42 or M44?

Yes it is standard 140 hp M42.

They had to create homologation special since FIA (the ruling body) outlawed 2D coupe that was being used until 1994. BMW already had 318i and 320i 4D sedans available but 318i had 8v M40 engine which was hopeless in racing because you could not change number of valves.

320i had 24 valve M50 but I think it was deemed too heavy engine to be competitive.

So they took M42 and put it on a 4D sedan body, sold 2500 of them and the rest is history

Also, 4D sedan body is more rigid, especially without folding rear seats. Coupe has always folding rear seats which hurt rigidity quite a bit.

So your car is the car that homologated the S42 racing 320i? nice. Do you know why they outlawed 2 doors? Not solid enough?

Not sure if S42 was already used in 318is Coupe during 1993, that car had M42 too.

I do not know why they outlawed coupe. I think it was to ensure that cars would have been roughly similar size and form. Made little difference with BMW 3 series but some other manufacturers might have had tiny 2 door hatches at the time they could have raced against heavier opponents

The S42 never made it into mass production...it was the racing version of the M42. 2.0 liter 4 cylinder outputing 286hp (more or less)

I meant S42 on racing 318is coupes naturally

To my knowledge, every 318is Class II sedan was shipped with rear wing riser blocks on trunk so owners could fit them if they wanted.
