Engine Identification
«

Hi there. I just bought a 1991 316i touring, but I believe it's been engine swapped. Somebody suggested it may be an M42? Could anybody give me some guidance?
Thank you very much!

Looks like a M42 out of an e36.

Is there any way to tell for sure? Any sort of serial number or vinnumber location on the engine?
Thanks for your reply!

Might be a VIN sticker still on it below starter on casting rib.
The head will have a casting date on the back.
It's an early e36 M42 with the individual coils instead of the 1 piece coil pack they went to on the 94/95 cars.
