Dbilas or RHD Itbs!
« on: February 09, 2017, 04:04:40 AM »
Okay here's the dealeo. 7 months in to owning my 318is. Brilliantrot, slicktop, 545,000 miles. All stock, unmolested. After working two jobs since I bought the car, I had enough saved for a top to bottom inspection from Kassel motor sports in WA. They were completely mind blown at the miles. Aside from a valve cover gasket and a harmonic balancer, my m42 is "immaculate".

With the checkup done, now it's time for some fun parts. I plan on tracking the car and daily driving it as well. I'm not planning on forced induction. Instead, I'm starting with breaks, suspension, exhaust, and itbs. I've decided on the typical e30 bro suspension kit (bilstien/h&r) and I have brakes/catback covered. Now onto a topic some might find controversial. Itbs on a daily. Here's the pickle I find myself facing. Dbilas, or RHD? About a $500 difference, with RHD kit being higher up price wise. This won't be for at least two months, so I have plenty of time. Fabricating my own manifolds and building my own kit is out of my skill range. I'd love to hear suggestions and input from some M42 guys that know their stuff.
Thanks!

Is your odometer running a bit "fast"?  That's incredible!

To answer your question, I'd go with the RHD ITBs, which are properly sized and engineered.

I had it checked out by a bimmer fanatic and he said it was running properly! Of course I double check his work hehe. I used a speedo app on my phone side by side the odo, all checks out. RHD itbs are dead sexy, when you say they're properly sized/engineered, does that mean the dbilas kit isn't?

i used the m3 e36 throttle bodies. once the middle pair are removed they don't take much work to bolt directly on to the m42/44 head. i have just bought another set for £120 and there seems to be plenty available

Did US e36 m3's come with itbs? I was under the impression those only came on euros.

There's a post somewhere on this board that compares the gains of Dbilas vs the RHD ITBs.  It's not an insignificant improvement.

The post comparing the two are here.

http://www.m42club.com/forum/index.php?topic=18442.225

Take note of the comments and digest the differences between the two comparisons as they are not like for like or a true Dbilas vs RHD comparison.

The RHD kit is on a newer M44 engine with mild exhaust mods.
The Dbilas kit is on a 230,000km M42 engine with full exhaust and a road tune aftermarket ecu. The Dbilas kit was modified to a state close to the RHD.

As the owner of the Dbilas kit in this comparison, I would recommend the buying the RHD kit as it is ultimately closer to where I modified the Dbilas kit to be. Something (for me) the extra $500 would justify.
