ABS and battery lights on after starting
« on: January 25, 2007, 08:22:45 PM »
How long are the ABS and battery lights supposed to stay on after starting?  Mine don't go out immediately like the rest.  They eventually go out, but I want to make sure I'm not doing something I shouldn't be.

Oh, and search didn't come up with anything regarding both lights on at the same time.

The alternators rarely go out on these cars.  It’s probably the brushes there are two screws on the back of the alternator that hold the brushes in  so I would see what condition they are in before you buy a new alternator(I’ve had several bmw’s that I’ve had to do this to).  But still don’t know if that will fix the problem.  Worth a shot.  http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AF93&mospid=47305&btnr=12_0556&hg=12&fg=22   # 10

Tell me more about your alternator swap. I'd like to do something like that.

Update: Got a new voltage regulator....didn't do the trick.  Guess I'll be running down to AutoZone or somebody for an alternator test.

If it is indeed the alternator, it is the curent handling diodes inside.  It is set up so that when one goes, the battery light will stay lit and you know.  Rarely is the light on due to the VReg going on these Bosch alternators.  I got mine rebuilt for $110.  They replaced the diode plate, VReg AND hot-tanked it.  Call around for alternator repair places.
