M44 Oil pump rotor in LATE M42?
« on: September 21, 2016, 11:13:44 AM »
Could someone confirm, does the M44 Oil pump from the M44 fit directly in to the LATE M42, from the e36?  I hear the M44 oil pump draws a bit more oil which could be beneficial.

Ive been googling and googling and cannot confirm.

M42 Rotor/oil pump 11141714611
M44 Rotor/oil pump 11141432096

The oil pump cover,   11141714613, is the same part so I am hopeful.

I've read on the internet that late late M42's had the larger oil pump but the ETK shows it changed with the M44.  You will need the lower M44 case to run the M44 oil pump AFAIK.

Thank you for the info. Is it generally recommended to replace an oil pump if you're opening the timing case?  Engine has 150k miles

Hi
The m44 oil pump is 10mm wide while the m42 all models is 8.5mm wide.
In short will not fit.
The m42 had different timing chain set ups though, improved as they went along. But I think the m44 head required more oil so they put a larger oil pump in.
It is also a common mod to put m44 timing case on the m42, to get the larger oil pump!
Cheers Rohan

Thanks for the good info.  I have the late M42, so I get some of the changes, as you said.  Importantly, I dont have that sprocket that tears down in the early m42.  I was hoping for a quick swap in the M42 for the M44 oil pump, but it would put me out of budget to get the M44 timing case and other pieces  so I will forego this.

Thanks

Hi

Yea it's not needed for a m42!
There is another way of doing this however.
Machining out the late m42 timing cover (oil pump area) big enough for m44 oil pump.

Cheers
