M42 drifter
« on: June 23, 2016, 06:36:46 PM »
Hello, im new to this forum.

I recently got bought a e30 318is and i planning on using it for drift.. i have already welded the diff, got shortshifter, chip for higher rpm and im planning on boosting it after the summer.

Plans in the summer are hydro, e36 steering rack, e46 control arms, and probobly customaize more steering angle, also i was planning on trying to gain maybe a little bit more n/a power.

So i was wondering if there is anyone in here that has any idea of how to gain more n/a power for drifting. Also i would like to see the specs on drift builds you guys have!

Best regards from Iceland.

From what i have researched there are not really any cheap options. Maybe engine swap for 6cyl ?

for the mean time your best bet is probably give the engine a full service so its running nice and healthy, hydro, strip it and drift it with 15/16" wheels and low profile tyres.
Works for me on my m44 e36.

Yeah, engine swap is a thought but i dont want to swap it unless i blow this motor. So i think i will start to boost it in the winter and run it like that until it blow and then engine swap maybe 2jz og lq4 or something like that.

Getting more power NA is a fair bit more hard work than boosting it, though you can do it. http://www.m42club.com/forum/index.php?topic=18442.0

The cheapest thing you can do to get some more power is to straight pipe the exhaust but keep the stock exhaust diameter, that will give you 5~8% more power across the rev range. If you up the exhaust diameter you'll see more peak power but lose your mid and low torque, which will make drifting in a small engine even harder.

Just picked up a m44 ti with basically no history, what kind of full service would you suggest.

Already looking at doing a full cooling overhaul. Probably should get it compression tested.. what else?
