I just wanted to know what kinds of options M42's have for transmission mounts.

Are there any other BMW models that have tougher tranny mounts or companies that sell polyurethane mounts?

you could just go to some aluminum ones if you want them to be stiff... any fab shop should be able to make them for you. or you could make them yourself if your capable..

I am about to investigate this issue, too. I have a box of assorted BMW mounts including some e23 stuff, and I'll see what fits and post it up. Might take me a few weeks. I'm in the midst of that M3 suspention swap.

I just bought the book 101 Performance Projects For Your BMW 3 Series 1982 - 2000 and it suggests to use early style 320i transmission mounts as an upgrade as they are thicker and flex less than most mounts.

I presume this is the E21 series as I don't believe the E30 320i was available in the USA where this book was published.

From realoem these would be:
RUBBER MOUNTING 09/1979 to 09/1982 P/N 23711175424 $18.30

The book also says that UUC make better mounts and also mount enforcers which prevent the mounts from expanding under compression.

There is a special set of mounts from the california versions of the e21 (motor and tranny) that are supposedly very firm etc. i guess the CA cars had extra smog related stuff...

Link to plastic supplier for Delrin rod and tube. $30 minimum order. Rod from .0125" to 4". Easy to make trans, motor, RCA, RSB, differential, and offset front control arm mounts.
Trans mounts = cut Delrin rod with a hole drilled in it plus 2 washers, 2 nuts, and a stud.

I have heard the same about the E21 mounts. On anything but a pure track car, I would avoid solid aluminum mounts. I would even be wary of solid Delrin ones. Look into the IE ones, the polyurethane ones.

UUC offers several transmission mounts that would fit our cars fine.

I have E21 320i Tranny mounts on my car. Installation is easy. You have to keep in mind that the E21 mounts use thicker studs and so some filing of aluminum is required.

I track my car and used to miss shifts. Since going to the stiffer mounts I haven't missed any. Also, I do not notice any more NVH due to the E21 mounts. They have been on the car for about a year now...

I bought the following for my car from pelican parts
they are much stiffer than normal ones.

Transmission Mount, E21 320i style (GREEN)
23711175424

Noting as said above they studs are slightly larger so you need to drill out
the holes in the transmission braket, the slots on the gearbox should be fine(mine were).

The shifter feels much better than it was, before i put these in i missed gears at the drags ocasionally, since putting them in i have never missed a gear.
I cant really see a point in putting in solid ones or anything much harder than
these mounts for street/ocasional track use. unless you have money to burn...

I was just informed that M42's use the same tranny mounts as M20's. That just solves tons of headaches for me. I'm going with AKG hard urethane tranny mounts.
