Decel Vibration/rattle after LWFW and clutch
« on: April 14, 2016, 10:54:20 PM »
Hey guys, I know that some of you have experienced some noise after installing a lightweight flywheel before and I'm hoping for a little help. I have a little bit of the "getrag rattle" which is to be expected and doesn't bother me at all. It's actually quieter now than it was before the clutch job. However, I have a somewhat annoying vibration/rattle when decelerating that occurs between about 2-3k rpm.

When I push the clutch in, the noise goes away.

It almost sounds like the heat shield of the exhaust is touching something it shouldn't, but I've checked and it isn't.

I have a RHD flywheel installed with an m20 Spec clutch installed. New OEM pilot bearing (the correct one), new throughout bearing, new clutch lever in the bellhousing, new return spring, and new pivot pin. Basically, everything I touched was replaced along with any seals. Z3 shift lever and Delrin bushings were also installed.

Did anyone experience this and figure it out? Just gear lash in the trans perhaps?

Hoping bmwman will chime in, I've seen a few similar posts like this that he was asking about a few years ago.

Weird you should only get noise like that in Angel gear!
What's the condition of the gear box?

Gear box is the original as far as I can tell, something over 180k miles. The input shaft had a little bit of play when out but I didn't see it as being excessive (and I didn't have another gearbox near by to put in either), so it went back in.

I did notice that the rubber around the CSB was starting to crack, so I'm going to replace that in a week or so. I don't think that it is making the noise though, more of a piece of mind thing.
