M42 trouble shooting
« on: November 24, 2015, 06:42:25 PM »
He'll everyone. I recently purchased a 1995 318is love the car just can't get it to run right. After reading all the threads and possibilities I figured I would start a post. Any input is much appreciated.
95 318is

First problem car hesitates /misfires total loss of power around 2k rpm under normal accelerating throttle. If I put the pedal all the way down it downshifts (automatic) and clears up. If the car is sitting in park and I blip the throttle it stumbles just a little bit slight miss under no load. It has no check engine light and no stored codes via the stomp test. Smells like gas from the exhaust very rich
I have replaced:
02 sensor bosch
Fuel filter
Various vacuum lines and have siliconed up the air boot.
Spark plugs proper ngk's

I have checked for vac leaks with carb cleaner probably used 3 cans no bump in idle

The AFM on the car appears to be new or newer it still had a small white tag on it that says remanufactured. The inside is uber clean and the door swing freely. I suspect it May be the reman afm.

I have pulled individual plug wires off. each create a misfire

*** When I unplug the afm the car stalls shouldn't it go into limp mode ? Or at least run ,is this a clue?

Next problem is  it has a bouncing or surging idle sometimes. Sometimes it goes away when the ac compressor kicks on the idle evens out. I suspect this is the icv as I cleaned it and this started happening after I cleaned it.

Any help is much appreciated

I'm almost positive I put the icv in properly because I took pics of its orientation. I'm more concerned with the hesitation /miss
Happy turkey day

Puzzling one there...

I do know that the full-throttle auto kickdown will change the fuel injection parameters to the wide open throttle (WOT) fuel map (ignoring the O2 sensor). The A/C will smooth out the idle since it bumps up the idle speed a few hundred RPM.

Did you use an O2 "sensor safe" RTV to seal the intake manifold? Silicone and the acids in many RTV formulations can damage the O2 element.

I'd check to see if someone messed with the TB adjustment and check the TB sensor. I'd also check the coolant temp sensor, the fuel pressure, and the knock sensors. I've heard a collapsed lifter can trigger the knock sensors. There are also a few hoses under the manifold that tend to crack. If you had a bad boot, there's likely more damaged rubber hoses under the manifold. That rat's nest of heater & vac hoses is famous for causing trouble.

Pulling the AFM connector should permit the motor to idle, but will stall the motor if you touch the throttle. These cars have no 'limp mode' that I'm aware of.
