m42 stroker

i was looking for an e30 as a fun runabout but they are not that easy to find these days, i bought an e30 316 and drove it around for a bit but it was gutless and a bit rough so ended up swapping it for an e36 318ti compact with the m42 engine. i loved the car but it wanted more power. i fitted 4 of the throttle bodies off an e36 m3, i made a loom and fitted a dta ecu. i was racing a subaru impreza at the time but enjoyed driving the compact so much i sold the impreza and turned the compact into a rally car.

it sounded lovely but only made a slight increase to the bhp with just the throttle bodies so i then bought a m47 diesel crank and sent the engine to shrigley engineering in Manchester who fitted the crank, some 86mm pistons, solid lifters and had some cams made. what a transformation. it is now 2086cc and has had a conservative map made on the dyno producing a safe 216bhp.

the engine builder has told me there is more to come from it with a mapping session by someone who specialises in mapping which is my next step. he was very impressed with the engine and knows there is lots more potential to be had from it

That volume sounds like you used a m47tu crank?
Ie stroke of 90 mm.

yes its the 90mm m47 diesel crank, the crank nosing was removed and the m42 nosing was attached so the external front crank sensor pick up could be used and the internal crank sensor wheel was removed

I've done the same thing, how did you make yours?

the easy way, i gave all the bits i had to an engineer who put it all together. it wasn't straight forward as the block had to be shortened which made the timing chain too long. I'm very impressed with what he did and how it runs.
much respect to you for doing it yourself. what power are you getting?
