E36 105a alternator wanted, early M42 v-belt type
« on: June 13, 2015, 07:39:05 PM »
I'm looking for an early E36 318 ('95 and earlier IIRC - these still had the V-Belt instead of the serpentine) had 105A alternator. P/Ns are 12 31 1 734 558 or 12 31 1 734 322 -- same alternator but 1st one is the newer number

Dammit, I just scrapped one.  You should have looked for it in the for sale section.
Pi is apparently the multiplier for your engine swap budget as well.

I'm hoping this isn't a stupid question, but can't you just swap the v-belt pulley onto a later serp-belt alternator? Are the offsets different? I don't know for sure, but I thought that was the normal way of doing it.

My '95 motor has the serp setup, I can take a few measurements to see if the 80A Bosch is fully compatible mounting-wise with the 105A Valeo. IMHO I'd stick with the 80A unit to improve fuel mileage.

They mount to the bracket completely differently, at least on the M44

I wonder if the Valeo shaft is the same size as the Bosch...it'd be easy to swap a pulley then. If I get a chance I'll take a few measurements.
