LOL (e36 m42 turbo vertical mount)
« on: February 15, 2015, 09:59:39 AM »
Just spotted this online... don't know if it has ever been posted here.
A little teaser:

not mine and don't know him. But I thought it was fun to share.
Huge props to them, seems funny.

Worth it? No way ;D , but funny project for sure!
(still lol at all that space at the exhaust manifold side ;D)

Thats an incredibly small turbo to use on a vertical mount. You think it would at least be large enough to justify the effort?!?!?

People rotate the engine a few degrees to get more clearance, but more than a few degrees requires a dry sump system so your oil can actually drain and be circulated.

I'm pretty sure that small turbo was just put there to take a funny pic...

and this is the real one  ;)

BTW they modded the sump, but it's still wet not dry. Surely modded the pump pickup etc.
Who knows if oil drains properly inside the engine when vertical like that or if there are areas where it could pool...

Also they did the dirty way on the gearbox: cut the gearbox bell housing to rotate it and rewelded.

Well the drains from top to bottom are on the exhaust side and rely on gravity to move the oil from intake side to exhaust!

That turbo is still too small to justify rotating the engine IMO. Either way, will be interesting to see how it works out.

well i just finished my turbo manifold that should accomplish main drawbecks in e36 chassis- equal lenght, bottom mount, gravity drain, will post pics soon in my humble WTF topic of a build :D
I say should because gravity drain is not tested yet but CHRA being higher than the oil level in sump makes me think it will be allright ;)
I agree that rotating engine, cutting shock towers, etc. is hardly justifiable.
