I told my wife I wanted a new shift knob for my 91 318is (mine literally popped off in my hand one day shifting to 2nd).   I wanted the STANDARD shift knob, but she either ordered incorrectly or they shipped incorrectly the M SPORT shift knob with the M on it.  My car is not an M car and I don't think it appropriate to go slathering it with M logos everywhere.  What do yall think?  Is an M Sport shift knob poserific or should I just keep it as an homage to M cars?

A difficult subject... If you have any intentions of misrepresenting your car as an m3 or m5 thats a no-no. The M3 connotation while similar to the "M" is different. The M literally means the Motorsport division but it is also an "Idea" of performance over stock trim levels. As such having an "M" is ok (I wouldn't do it on a stock 318 but modified maybe..) as its just paying homage to the motor sport division and to performance. One thing no one should EVER do is put an M or M3 as a replacement trunk badge to many people fake m3's for me to even want to venture into that territory.

Which knob is it? You can order just a new emblem for it. I bought a ZHP knob, then painted the silver ring black, and swapped in a new three-stripe emblem (the same emblem that came with my 318is).

my wife got me the zhp M knob as well.  I'm not about to go badging my car as an M3 on the outside, so i don't see an issue with that knob.  I've got alcantara shift boot and brake boots with M coloured stitching.

if you like the knob, use it

apparently my notifications are messed up - never saw any of these!   It is the leather stock knob from BAV Auto.

What is difference in that and the ZHP?

ZHP looks smaller.....I didn't even know they had that one.  Probably would have liked it better.  Their shipping is so much, don't know if wanna swap it out.

The ZHP is a bit shorter and weighted. I personally love the feel of the weighted knob. RealOEM has part numbers for the different emblem options. Also some on ebay. I just waited till I needed other parts then tacked a three-stripe emblem on to the order.

Just put it on and be thankful you have such a thoughtful person in your life that she would go and do something for you like this.

Instead of looking at and thinking it's wrong every time how about look and and think she got me this!

If you put an M badge to the trunk, it should not necessarily mean you re posing as M3. For instance, I put an M logo on front grille and trunk just because I have an M steering wheel, M shift knob, M Tech II kit, M seat pins (all original OEM).
