M42 Maintenance / Reconditioning
« on: December 22, 2014, 08:18:12 AM »
Greetings!

I've just brought an M42 from an E36 (129.000Km/80.000Miles) to swap into my E30 316i. I would like to know what parts do you guys think should be replaced before starting the swap itself. I was thinking in something like this:

Cranshaft seals both front and rear
Timing chain tensioner (The improved one from the M44?)
Timing chain guide rails
Valve cover gasket
Thermostat
Water Pump
Radiator hoses?
Vaccum pipes?
Intake and Exhaust mainfold gaskets??

Am i missing something? Any help would be apreciated  8)

In addition, I'd check the condition of the cam shaft sprockets.  The teeth should not be pointy. At 80,000 miles I doubt they will be.

Remove the upper oil pan and re-secure its bolts using Locktite.  They have a habit of becoming loose and can thereby introduce air bubbles into the oil system.
