Starter not disengaging - new clutch and flywheel

I'm running an m42 turbo with a getrag 260 gearbox.

I decided to go with an e36 m3 clutch AND flywheel as the current clutch couldn't handle the 300 odd hp it's putting down.

I was expecting it to be a straight Bolt up jobbie and it would be, as It's all bolted back up, however the starter motor will not disengage now.

I have not had any issues from the starter prior to the clutch and flywheel install. Is it possible, or likely, that it's due to the e36 m3 flywheel, or what else could be causing this issue?

e30 OR e36 frame?

may be you should've used a E36 starter...

otherwise I would say remove/dismantle/clean/lub your starter

there are differences between M20 flywheel/starter gear and M42 flywheel/starter gear, you can't use a M20 flywheel with a M42 starter (at least earlier M20), so you could have the same issue with a M42 starter gear and E36 M3 flywheel, but I doubt it.
By M3 do you mean euro or US M3 (S50 or S52) ?

Yeah from what I've gathered that' the case with some m20 FW's however I didn't think that the m42 and e36's were different. From memory, all e36 starters are pretty much the same and given that the e36 shared this motor and that e36/e30 m42 FW's etc were interchangeable that through a convoluted linking process, I shouldn't have any issues with starter.

It's a 240mm Clutch, I belieeeeeve its euro (s50) kit as I don't think we get much, if any american gear down here in NZ.

Some starters are wired differently. I didn't think there were any differences between the E36 and E30 starter though. With the earlier M30 cars there are a few revisions you have to be aware of. Even worse, we've seen a lot of rebuilt Bosch starters that were incorrectly spec'ed for cars despite being listed that way. So you might have to swap a terminal or add a earth/grounding wire to the solenoid from the starter chassis. You could also have a duff solenoid. IIRC a few of the newer starters post-80s starters are the improved gear reduction models. The wiring is likely the same but they may have moved some connectors around on the starter housing.

I'd presume if both starters had the same problem, you'd have to check the key switch, unloader relays, etc. That doesn't seem to be your problem though.

Flywheel was sitting fractionally closer towards the motor causing the starter to hang up on it. Spaced the starter back, problem solved! cheers team
