1991 318is Cooling help.
« on: August 19, 2014, 11:46:29 PM »
Alright guys, Im a noob to the forum so please be nice. So i am having a small issue with my cooling system, so when it gets warm the temp gage will sit right above the 50% mark, like an 8th between 3/4s and 1/2. I have replaced radiator water pump and t-stat. i have also done a coolant flush. And i spent countless hours to figure out how properly bleed the system so yes i believe i did it properly. only coolant comes out when i open the bleed screw. And i had a master mechanic look at the clutch fan and he said it was in perfect condition. is it okay if my temp gage and temp sits where it does? or is there something else i can do?

I can't say if it is okay or not but that is where mine sits and has sat for the last three years.
On really hot days in traffic it will move up a bit from there.

Where does the needle sit when the engine is shut off? I had a car years ago with readings the same as you until I realized the needle was sitting in the upper blue range with no power to the car. I repositioned the needle to sit off the left side of the 1/4 mark approximately 3/16" from the white line. When the engine came to temp, the needle sat in the 1/2 range and I verified with a scanner that the gauge was reading correctly.
