cranks but wont start trouble shooting
« on: June 15, 2014, 12:48:28 AM »
so im new to bmw's and just picked up my 1st e30 m42. i drove to from knoxville all the way back down to acworth, ga where i live with no problems and now it wont start up. i replaced the fuel pump since it was dead, i tested it to make sure, and the filter. the car started right up and when i went to work and it sat for a few hours now it wont start again. i checked to make sure its getting spark, i can heard the pump pumping while im trying to start the car and when i was looking under the hood i noticed a black plug in between the back of engine and the firewall that was not connected but i cant see where it goes? its a very short cord so it cant go far but i cant see or even feel where there might go. does any one know what it is and where it goes?  the male end makes and L shape. i sprayed starting fluid in the filter and car starts but dies so it sounds like its not getting fuel whats the next most likely suspect? regulator, rail, injectors? any help and advice will be greatly appreciated   ;D

Cam you post a pic of the cord?
It might be the cord to the idle control valve.

unfortunately not its under the fuel rail and next to the iacv it looks like its comming out of the wiring harness that the fuel rail plugs into the black plastic box that sits just under the intake manifold. its a very short plug wire that cant go far so it wud have to be some where close or maybe needs to go down some where toward the starter area. i really dont know if this wire has to do with the car not starting but it looks too important to ignore. i sprayed starting fluid in the intake while i was cranking it and it fired rite up but wudnt idle so its definitely a fuel problem. i can hear the pump working, i changed the fuel filter, so its not getting fuel in between the filter and block. i checked the fusses and relays and they all work. next thing will need to do is a pressure test and go from there i guess. any ideas what to check or look for let me know i wud appreciate it thanks.

Need to post a pic of what you're talking about.
I had both E30's here yesterday and looked at both where you are talking about and the only plugs were for the IAC, all the plugs inside the box? Maybe the temperature sender to IAC or Console? Coming out of that box in front they go to Cam Position and Crank position sensors.

Sorry. snap a pic and post or email to me @ deansweet a t t gmail.com
