Rear exhaust hanger NLA?
« on: May 16, 2014, 07:56:56 AM »
I need to replace the rear exhaust hanger that welds onto the spare tire tire well of a '91 318is. It shows up in the parts book illustration as part # 22 here, but is missing from the parts list below it. The list simply ends with part #19:
http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BA73&mospid=47325&btnr=41_0329&hg=41&fg=25

Digging through earlier versions of the same diagram for the big-bumper cars, the same list is used for fewer (19) parts, also ending with part #19. I suspect the same list is mistakenly carried over, without updating it. Parts sources say (sensibly) that they can't get parts for which they don't have a number. Sooo:

1. Does anyone out there have the old parts books for a '91 318is where the part number might reside?

2. Does anyone know if this hanger was used on other cars?

3. Plan C. Get one fabricated, I guess. Other Ideas?

The part diagrams often include extraneous parts.  Are you sure it's not one of these parts?

I'm thinking the part you need might be #15 in that diagram - "Bracket exhaust, rear; 41121911152; $7.83". Odd that they'd put it there, above the trunk panel, but that's my guess. Not all parts pictured are used in all models; BMW uses one diagram to illustrate many chassis variations.

The mounts are the same in all the E30s I've seen, regardless of year. The mufflers and pipes are all different, but adapted to fit the same chassis mounts. The forward mounts off the transmission are all different though.

Have you been to your local dealer? They've been helpful to me in the past, and were not too expensive. I love asking for help with my nearly-worthless car's problems whilst using their bandwidth & sipping a complimentary Starbuck's coffee. I also play a game every time I head out there. I try to park my car between the two most expensive customer cars in the lot. It's not an easy game, as BMWs are now so obese that they don't fit in standard spaces.  ::)

I think you're right. In looking at the post previous to yours, I looked at the rear body diagram for that site, and I came to the same conclusion. Sorted. Thanks.

Going the dealer is a great game. Shopping the parts desk for an E9 or a 2002 is a "who's on first?" game of "what series is it"? "No, no It's not a series, it's a three-point-oh-see-ess." "Yeah, but what series is it?" Round and round we go.

LOL. I look forward to that game every time I go. I love making them order stuff from Der Vaterland. While that's fun, I have to admit that I feel a bit misty-eyed when I recall the legendary parts guys of yore.

A while back, we had a store called "Import Parts." What else would you have called it, right? They were professionals...parts were cheap and their corrosive commentary sense of humor was free. Made me fell like a damn kid every time I stepped in there (I was, too  ;D). But they saved me a ton of time & money. I never was able to stump the parts guy with any request. The best I ever did was get him to ask the other guy. Unreal. Once, he reached under the counter for a set of spark plugs I needed without even looking. It was the closest thing to magic I've ever seen. First time I'd installed NGK plugs, and I still use them today.

I agree with Dave I think it's #15 in the diagram but I'm not sure.  Mine just broke off the car the other week so I can snap a picture of it tonight if you'd like.  I still need to get the car to a muffler shop and have them weld it back to the body, but I'm waiting on a new hanger ring for in front of the muffler.

#22 is the jack hold-down bracket for the E30 M3. http://www.etk.cc/bmw/EN/search/selectGroup/47312/41_0328/41121919948

The image below is from a 1989 325i Coupe I parted out.

#15 (pink circle) is the bracket attached to the spare tire well and supports the aft muffler clamp.

#16 (red circle) is the bracket attached to the outboard side of the support member and supports the forward muffler clamp.

#17 (yellow circle) is the bracket attached to the inboard side of the support member, hidden by the muffler heat shield and not visible. Actually...I couldn't find it installed on my E30 318is. ???

This is an image I took from BAVAUTO's website: The bracket in the yellow circle and in the BAVAUTO image both have an angle cut on them which led me to believe it is part number 41111922407, aka, #17.

This is a picture of my car with the LH, rear wheel removed. As you can see, the forward hangar bracket is rusted half away and I believe this is #16, part number 41121919948.

Looks like I'll find out for sure when I order it. :)
