Connars 318is aka "Grumps"
« on: March 30, 2014, 03:03:54 PM »
Hi,

So bought my e30 about six months ago. Absolutely love it. 3 owners from new including myself FSH including the bill of sale.

Now for the part alot of people seem to pull faces at aha. Yes I want to change parts on it. Lowered it on the H&R 60/40 kit and changed the wheels and as for now that's it!

Looking to hopefully run the "Dbilas" full ITB setup in the future as and when I can afford it. Which hopefully if and when I do it I'll start a build thread :) that and the H&R ARB kit, a tighter steering rack, short shift kit and an m20 flywheel. Basically when the ITBs are fitted the car will be stripped down and a lot redone aside from a respray. Rebuild the engine to cope with the cams and other stresses the ITB may introduce.

Anyway enough of me running on! Anyone off here who has run the ITB setup PM me I've loads of questions! Aha

Welcome to the club! I think you have a good plan there. You'll need a standalone like VEMS or MS, there's some build threads around. With a bit of adapting, you can use Euro E36 M3 bodies too, I'm told.

Why "Grumps?"

Been on Dbilas website seem to sell management for it? Unsure 8) either way I will be looking into great detail as to what cam setup etc, as it will be a daily fast road car.

But will need to cope with fingers crossed the extra power. Any actually realistic figures as to what power a standard yet rebuilt block, pistons, rods etc but with a re worked head say 264 degree cams a ported and polished head the ITB setup and a map?

Been told cams cause stress to the bottom end of the engine?

Aha "Grumps" yeah that's the girlfriends name for it. She hates it haha she referred to it as a..... I quote "a grandads car" so became "grandad grumps" I was like  :o yeah ok..... Just stuck haha

BMW recently did move the E30 into classic status. The E36 will be there soon too, if you can believe that. They still look new to me!

I keep getting older myself...and I don't just mean in years/experience (wisdom?). The cars I buy are older. My 745i is from 1984...I had an '81 633CSi...and I'm considering a Bavaria and an '83 635CSi currently!

Now THOSE are Gramps cars, LOL.

Connar - skip the DBilas and do the E36 M3 bodies! They fit. I've also been considering larger motorcycle throttle bodies. They're common, cheap and reasonably easy to configure for our needs. I bought a set of Yamaha R6 bodies for another project; they're 38mm and flow enough air & fuel to run a warmed over M42.

Cheers for the response Dave. Yeah think I'm going to have a look into the 36 ITBs. That just shows your getting old  ;D my e30 is older than me aha. Saying that it isn't that old mine is a 1990 plate, but still old to me. I was going to buy an e21 before my e30 that would have been a classic!

Connar... You can get the S54 ITB's which are more readily available and there are a few companies making adapter plates.

Then if you want, you can get cams that are close to the Schrick 256*. That's what I have, 250* with 10.3mm lift vs 256* with 10.4mm lift. The 250* cam is more aggressive. Contact Dick Chiang at Dynospot racing in California if you're thinking about the Schrick cams.

That should definitely give a bit of a punch with cams and ITB's. As far as HP goes....it's more about the torque really. Get a good torque curve and you'll always be moving forward quickly. LOL  Lots of HP on a dyno sheet means nothing. But I know we get caught up in HP numbers to get a standard of comparison. So I'll take a stab at it....stock motor with ITB's and 25x-ish cams with the right tuning should get you in the 165-170 crank HP area. If you have the proper tuning it could be even more. Just a guess though. If your tuning isn't changed, well.. then you might not get to that number.  Hahaha

Just remember that changing the top end, say cams, will only move your power band higher in the rpm range. If you want to have more torque then you'll need to change the bottom end.

Cheers,
~Ralph

That just shows your getting old  ;D my e30 is older than me aha.

I was *just* barely old enough to drive when the first E30s came out...and I could drink [legally] a solid year before my 318i was built!

Don't worry, we don't discriminate against youth & inexperience. I might add that you have much better taste in cars than the bulk of your generation... ;D

Thanks I'll take that as a good compliment!  :D not over keen on "boy racers" as they are called in the UK, give the car scene a bad name. Revving up my car and acting like a tool isn't what being an enthusiast about cars is about in my book.

Cheers for the in depth reply. Seriously considering the best setup for it, money at the moment is the only obstacle. Don't know how hard I'd want the car to work with regards to RPM as it will be daily driven. However I want to gain the extra power and obviously the noise. A mini csl induction noise would be epic whilst keeping it old school and practical.  ::) the car ironically in the short 8 months I've owned it has become strangely important to me so want to keep it original paint yet tighten the engine, diff etc.

Anyone know how well m42 engines cope with the "mark d" chips or equivalent. Just curious as to the extra RPM etc.
