I have recently swapped an e36m42 into my e30 replacing the m40 motor. but I used back and m40 engine brackets and the m40 engine mounts (though new).

in less than 6 months, the right side od engine mount collapsed completely destroying the mount. also, the mysterious seemingly unsolved vibrations at 2500 rpm are there from day 1.

I checked the etk online and found that m42 uses thicker round rubber mountings and hence more expensive than the solid rubber m40 mount. I also found out that the brackets meant for m42 are also different.

the m42 brackets for e30 m42 are hard to find. I am just curious if anyone here has tried using tried using m42 mounts with m40 brackets?

please advise.

thanks.

Someone was experimenting with OEM mounts on here. IIRC it was an E28 M30 mount (early 80s 533i & 535i).

We all got the pricey thicker rubber (hydraulic disc) mounts here. They've never been cheap...but at least they last. The M42 does seem a bit buzzy, BMW put a lot of effort into reducing NVH.

No idea on the M40 brackets - we didn't get any SOHC M4x over here at all.

PM Keflaman - he might have a spare set (or three) of E30 M42 mount arms. I have a pair of E36 arms, but they most definitely won't fit.

The M40 was never sold in the USA actually. Sort of like how BMW has not had a 4-cylinder model for sale here since the year 1999, although BMW might be selling the new turbocharged 4's here now.

There should not be too much trouble finding someone with M42 mount arms for sale. Shipping to Singapore may be a little expensive, but it may be the best option. An alternative to the M42 mounts is the mount from an E28 535iS with the M30B35 engine. I ran those for many years because they cost a lot less than the hydraulic M42 mounts. They do cause a LOT more vibration though, and I eventually went back to using the proper M42 mounts.

Visit HERE for a plethora of 318iS stuff and some other randomness.  Would you say I have a, plethora, of pinatas?

www.rmeuropean.com has the Hamburg Technic brand for $50 per mount. fcpeuro.com has the genuine BMW mounts for $74.

I just installed a set of the Hamburg Technic mounts, so I will have to see how they hold up.

BMW of Morristown, NJ, has the OEM mounts for ~$58 a piece. http://www.bmw-oem-parts.com/

They've become my go-to parts supplier in the past year.
