Quick background...this M42 is the first engine rebuild I've ever done. What would take an experienced wrencher 2-3 hours, took me about 2-3 months. A lot of triple checking, a lot of installing, removing, and reinstalling. I've learned a lot. I can now name nearly every part on an M42.
This is what I've done to the M42;
- New Waterpump w/ Metal Impeller
- New Hoses (cooling/fuel/vacuum) including Mess Under the Intake
- New Main Bearings
- New Rod Bearings
- New Piston Rings
- New Head Bolts
- New Seals/Gaskets (everywhere)
- New Thermostat
- New Timing Chain Guides (LH and Lower)
- Kept the old cam gears
- Kept the old timing chain
- Kept the old pistons
- Kept the old rod/bearing caps
- Kept the old vavle stems
- Kept the old crankshaft
During the the piston installation, i was able to hand crank the engine and the pistons would move up and down freely (Used Marvel Mystery Oil as lubrication when installing the pistions). There wasn't any knocking noise or any sounds of metal scraping.
When i placed the head on and adjusted the pistons and camshafts to TDC, the pistons moved freely. When i got to placing the timing chain on, the force to move the crank clockwise became extremely difficult. FYI, the spark plugs are not in, so I dont think compression is a factor...could be wrong though.
I even used an impact to tighted the harmonic balancer bolt and the crank still wouldnt move.
Everything has been lubricated and primed. I did not place break-in motor oil just yet since the engine is out of the car. I'm thinking it may have to do with a stuck hydraulic lifter, but any opinions to help this noob would be appreciated.
Is the engine suppose to hand crank after a rebuild? Do i need to place motor oil to hand crank it? How tight is the timing chain suppose to be?
Thanks!
