E30 318 is on ICE/SNOW Advice Needed
« on: December 17, 2013, 07:37:45 AM »
For those who experienced snow/ice driving
What would you recommend for e30 to avoid losing traction on ice/snow
Snow socks or snow chains?
I already tried snow chains
The installation is very painful
I noticed that tire socks are very easy to install got this information based on some videos from the web
But can’t find answers on how will they perform on ice?
advice is appreciated

A good set of snow tires and a limited slip and you've got a tractor

Snow tires and place some bags of sand, water softener salt, or whatever you can find that is portable and heavy in trunk.
There is no street legal automobile that functions well on ice.

What about studded tires?

What about studded tires?

There are so many laws out there regarding studded tires that I didn't give that an a answer with merit.
Plus, they are for ice/snow only...

Where are you located? As Deansweet indicated above, there are different regulations in many areas. I found this to be interesting: http://www.eu-verbraucher.de/fileadmin/user_upload/eu-verbraucher/PDF/Berichte/winter_tires_ECCs_november2013_01.pdf

Depends where are you driving and what winter you are having. Outside the town the narrowest studded tires possible and my choice this year was Bridgestone   86T BLIZZAK SPIKE 01 XL. In town if you do not have lots of ice you can use just winter tires which can be wider a bit cos there will not be so much slush and loose snow.

Studded tires can be used on tarmac and the braking performance will not be so different from just M+S tires. In any case if you want your tires to last longer than one season you should be gentle with them on tarmac.

And good LSD will make your life much more easier than best set of tires. LSD changes the car so much on loose surface that you will love to drive on snow or ice ;)
