Help! Looking at buying a 1991 318is
« on: November 04, 2013, 01:43:52 PM »
I am looking at this 1991 318is this evening and I am hoping to get some opinions on it. I have never bought an e30 and don't know what to really look for when buying. An tips or concerns that you could offer me would be greatly appreciated. From what I can tell I will need to put some work into this specific 318is but I don't know if the price is right. Thanks in advance for your help!

Looks not too bad..but depends what you want from it.. I bought one in August..I see some familiar trouble spots: rusted out battery compartment, brake pad wear sensor wires dangling loose, lotsa rust...

Advice: Check vin make sure its a true iS. Use this link:  http://www.vindecoder.net/car-brand-manufacturer/bmw or others...
I dont see the iS exhaust nor the correct steering wheel... so double check..

Check out my build thread to see what you may be getting into: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=303137

I just bought mine on a sheer desire to own one and to rebuild it...so I wanted trouble spots.. mind you I paid 2400 for a car pretty much in the same shape as this one...but Im looking at about 15000$ to restore it to mint condition... :-\

Good luck

Thanks for all the info. I have asked for the VIN number, I would hate to get it and not have everything check out. I don't think I will be restoring to mint condition, so I can deal with some of the issues. Good luck with restoring yours, I'll be watching what you do with it!

Price is low - car looks like it's in pretty good shape.  Most of the stuff you'd look for is the same as any other car.  Check all the fluids for contamination, check undercarriage for rust, verify VIN on all panels, run VIN through NICB to see if it's ever been totalled or stolen.  He's been remarkably up-front about condition too, and fixed a lot of the little problems these cars have.  He seems to really know what he's talking about.  I'd do a quick Google search on all the usual E30 sites to see if the owner has posted anything there. For instance, I found this at R3v, likely not the right car, but it could be.

Here's a BMW VIN decoder that will give you the original build sheet (including originally-installed options!):
http://www.bmwarchiv.de/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html

As far as E30 stuff, check the front suspension bushes and joints for wear.  Look for any rust damage in front of the doors, at the base of the a-pillar.  Lower door frames & rocker panels are vulnerable to jacks & lifts.  Rear body near subframe bushings can rot out, fuel tank commonly gets dented.  Happily the E30 is a stout little car, but always take a flashlight and a magnet.

As for M42 stuff, overheating is a big problem.  Check coolant and oil for cross-contamination.  Any milkiness under the oil fill cap is cause for concern. Listen for cam noise - ask if the M44 tensioner has been updated.  Ask him if he's tightened the upper oil pan bolts - they tend to work loose and can starve the motor of oil.  Hopefully all it needs is a new clutch.

Good luck!

Reggie could probably hook you up with a pre-purchase inspection if desired.  He's got a great indy shop down that way. http://www.reggiesmotorworks.com/

Airbag steering wheels were option S242A. All three IS' I bought came with them.

I buy them all day long for that price and condition as parts cars, but this one looks to have a nice interior. Honestly, I'd drive it as is while I looked for "the right one."

and the CL Ad was deleted...
If I hadn't just used my 'Wife ok card' on the 1999 Accord I just picked up for $600 I'd been all over this.

Nice buy out there for someone!
