Author Topic: Brake pads/rotors (Read 3546 times)

I was going to be purchasing some brake parts soon and was wondering what people thought of the following. The car is a DD and a few times a year, about 5 times, I take it to the autox (5-10 1-2 minute runs).

Brembo Blanks
Hawk HPS (front)
Mintex Redbox (rear)
ATE Fluid (have it lying around already unopened)

BTW, what does the clip on the rear calipers do, my passenger rear I just noticed today is missing and there seems to be a slight brushing noise back there at low speeds.

The pads I currently have are virtually dust free, it takes close about a month for them to get unbearably dusty. Sad thing is I don't know what brand they are since the PO put them on. I want the mintex in the rear because I've heard from others that they the least out of most pads, plus they're the rear that don't do much work right?

Sounds like a good setup.

Mintex Red Box does dust less than OEM and comparable pads. You can even get Mintex for the fronts based on your description of usage.

Difference will be Hawk will have less fade resistance from 60+mph-0 on repeated stops, Mintex will have the better initial bite characteristics.

Mintex also has a new agressive "C" compound option as well but I haven't tried it yet.

I would get the rattle clip. The only thing I would leave off is the brake wear sensor.

When comparing mintex red box and hawk hps, which produce less dust? I'm deciding whether I should stick to the mintex I have now or switch to hawks.

OP, I'm glad you brought up discussion about the clip. I'm experiencing a similar problem.

I would also suggest getting a clip back on there. I'm not sure about the dust levels but I think the hawk hps will be pretty dusty from my experience with the hp+.

The scraping noise is probably coming from the e-brake shoes. Replacing them solved the scraping noise in my car.

Hi guys,

I'm actually having difficulties with my brake system. I got zimmerman drilled rotors for the fronts and rears and I have the ceramic compound on the front and Mintex red-box on the rear, but I have brake shake, and I don't ride them THAT hard at all. Mine is like pretty much everyone else's here, a daily driver that I have spirited drives home on. Some info would be nice. And by the way, the front calipers are rebuilt as of 10k miles ago and the rear calipers are new as of 10k ago.

Brake shake as in when you step on the brakes, the steering wheel shimmies? That could be worn out front control arm bushings or worn out caliper mount bushings.

I don't see how, unless I got bad from stock bushings. I rebuilt the whole caliper, bushings and all, and I got new contol arm bushings from BMP. The shake is 90% in the pedal. Once-in-a-while I feel it in the steering wheel, but most of the time it's in the pedal, and when I reapply pressure, or put more pressure on it, it's fine, nice and firm, no shake.
