BMW Z3 1.9 Turbo?
« on: September 11, 2013, 09:02:37 PM »
Hello, I am most likely going to install a turbo into my Z3. I was thinking on a T3 .60. Boost will be less that 7.5psi. If I install a turbo chances are Im going to need a new ECU correct? If I do, do I have to program it? If so, how?

Sounds like a great idea - the Z3 is a great platform for a bit more power.  That isn't a crazy amount of boost, you might be able to get away with a rising-rate fuel pressure regulator (RRFPR) and larger injectors with the stock DME/ECU.  I'd also strongly recommend a WBO2 and some additional instrumentation.  That's how a PO upgraded my '84 745i, the car runs great.  I don't have any firsthand experience actually doing this to an M4x though, but there are a bunch of guys here that have.

You'd also have the option of a standalone ECU like Megasquirt or VEMS.  There are also a few members on this board can help out with programming - PM BMWConnect and see what he can do for you.

Dave has great advice. I would contact BMWconnect and see what he can do. It is the mich cheaper and easier option!

Thanks for the help! :D WBO2 is definitely on my list. Just a few more questions. How do I know what injectors to get? Do I have to do some kind of calculations? If I do consider buying a Megasquirt I would probably have to modify my wiring harness to hook it up, right? And what is the next after I have my setup installed and ECU installed? I just can't start my car.

.60 Turbo
External Wastegate less than 7.5psi
Custom exhaust manifold
Boost Controller
Small Intercooler
WBO2 sensor
Custom stainless steel exhaust
MS3 ECU (If I need it)
Larger injectors
RRFPR
Air/Fuel ratio gauge
Boost Gauge
Blow Off valve
Mushroom intake filter
Aluminum Piping
Bosch 044 fuel pump (If I need it)
Anything else?

If you go the new ECU route you will need to configure and tune the ecu. This means connecting to a laptop and going through setting up the settings particular to your engine. Some ECU manufacurers have 'base maps" or preconfigured settings but generally not for our engines. (not sure about MS though others are using it and could help with info). If you have an understanding of how engines work and the signals and timing involved you can get you engine running. If your flying completly blind your best to ask somone to help. Even then the only way to achieve a propper tune is some dyno time.

Choosing if you need an ecu or not depends on your level of tune/power required. Stock ecu's have been used in may cases.

There are pleny of calcs on the net for injector sizing based on required HP etc

Alright thanks. Ill see if I can get away with my factory ECU. But if  I get MS, Ill just call someone over just to get me started. I hope I have all the parts in my list to make my turbo work. I pretty much know how to put everything together, just the software is bugging me. Anyways I won't be doing this turbo for a while because I'm still researching. :D

Also Im not trying to make my car 300hp or something like that. Honestly for my first turbo build, I can't be happier If I can get 200+hp :) .

Do a lot more reading before you purchase anything. Turbos are complicated if you want your engine to be reliable, get a grasp on it before you jump in.

Just doing some quick calculations. At 220BHP, .6 B.S.F.C, .8 Duty Cylce, 43.5 pressure at rail, I'm going to need at least 41.5psi 436cc/min injectors. What I found was BOSCH EV6 injectors. Did I do the calculations correct? 220BHP is what I would like to get.
