M42 On E30 not starting after swap
« on: June 03, 2013, 10:10:01 AM »
Hey guys,
I've just swapped a M42 to my E30.
When I try to start the engine, there is cracking but there is no spark and the fuel pump is not working.
The crank sensor is fine.
The ECU is working fine on another M42.
When cracking there is no signal from the DME to the fuel pump realy.
Another thing, we are using an automatic engine harness but the car was manual before.
We went trough every pin on the ECU and everything seems to work fine.

Any help would be helpful  ;D

Thank you very much,
Itzik99

I had a similar problem swapping a manual motor into an automatic car - I had to jump the auto interlock relay.  It's a harness running under the driver's carpet up the transmission tunnel IIRC.  It prevents the motor from starting when the shift lever isn't in P or N.  But that's on the chassis harness, might not be related to your problem at all.

You're swapping over an E36 harness & motor into the E30?  Make sure the DME isn't an EWS model.  There's a thick green wire on the motor harness you have to jump to make that work right, not sure which pin it is on the DME plug.

Hey again,
After checking every single input pin to the DME, all of them are getting power but pin 64, which is related to the EGS.
The pinout says it's "Ignition timing intervension", is the pin 64 need to get any signal?
May it cause my problem?
I don't know what the check anymore.. I've checked the camshaft sensor, the crankshaft sensor, and all the wires. everything looks ok.

Any ideas?
Thank you!

P.S
The car is a 1988 E30
The engine is M42 E36

I would guess that "Ignition timing intervention" would refer to the knock sensors that the E36 has but the E30 doesn't.  I am surprised that they'd interfere with the car starting though.

If the Engine is a M42 out of a 1995 EWS equipt DME then cutting wires will not work. The only way to remove it is with a EWS delete chip which replaces the original chip on the board.  I sell the EWS delete chip for $100. Can you give me the DME bosch # ? and numbers found on the chip inside the DME/ECU and I will confirm it. All the best!

The DME is from 91 M42,
DME Bosch number 0 261 200 175'
The DME is working fine on another M42.
