fuse 19 woes. help please!
« on: May 22, 2013, 02:29:11 PM »
A few weeks ago I bought a 91 318is and have been enjoying it a lot. The issue I'm having is that my fuse 19 blows sporadically. Last time it blew I was going down the freeway, hit a dip and then my mirrors started going apeshit and then the fuse blew. From the repair manual fuse 19 is for the aux fan, interior lights and power mirrors. If anyone can point me in the right direction to diagnose this it would be much appreciated. Are there any common issues with the previously mentioned systems. Also if anyone has a good wiring diagram for the 91 e30 318is that would also be helpful. If i'm beating a dead horse please link me to somewhere where this is discussed. I've searched this site and on google a few times and haven't been very successful.

Thanks in advance

Matt

I'd suspect the power mirror switch.  It just pulls straight out - it can be carefully taken apart...see if it has a hard short in it anywhere.  I'd also massage the rubber boots off the door harness connectors and see if you have water in there.  The windshield seals can leak water into that housing from inside the a-pillars.  I've seen them corroded together solidly.

Lemme see if I can get that wiring diagram.

BTW - don't DL the '91 ETM from that link above...get the '92 'vert ETM.  The '91 is not complete.

Perfect. I dont know whether I'll be able to get around to it this weekend but when/if I figure it out I'll be on here with an update. Thanks again.

Sorry to revive a dead topic but DesktopDave, you're the man. A while back I looked at the door jamb boot that covers the wires. Popped it off and it was corroded. removed corrosion and made sure contacts were clean. put it all back together. now fuse 19 hasnt blown in months. Thanks a lot, I wouldn't have suspected that connector there.

You'd solved the problem yourself - your description was so incredibly precise!

BMW's switchgear has tremendously improved since the 80s.  Earlier cars tend to have a lot of electrical problems - especially HVAC controls.
