One more way to cut parasitic drag...never a bad idea.  Are you shooting for power, efficiency or a little of both?

Im doing the electric water pump to delete as much parasitic drag on the motor
& because from all I read a lot of people are talking about doing it  & all have there opinions
both good and bad , yet no one seems to have done it.
So I am doing it (as soon as it gets to my house)
  I just removed my complete A/C system & after the electric water pump
I plan on doing an electric p/s system.

the kit arrived today by ups.
Wow this thing is really small & really skinny.
Quality looks to be pretty good from what I can tell.

bad news though I tore my ACL in my right knee about a month ago and day after tomorrow I go in
for operation. So it will be a weeek or 2 b4 I can actually install the unit.
It gives me time to have the old pump gutted and the hole at the end welded up closed.
might have a nut welded in for the temp sensor..

any questions ask me Ill give the answer straight up no bs.

BTW, I've heard about people adapting the Mercedes A-class P/S pump to work in an E30 M3.

  after the EWP my plans are for EPS (electric power steering), how hard it is to do determines if I actually do it.

the EWP KIT:
From what I can see so far the EWP will drop in like it was made for the m42.
The way the lower hose from radiator is shaped or travels, its the same direction as the new EWP.

The oem water pump I had, I gutted & cut it down so it doesnt stick out much from the motor.
The end of the oem pump that goes into the block, I also cut away as much as I could, leaving the
area that holds the o-ring in tact.

Then I took a steel washer, welded the washers hole closed.
The washer I used just barley fit into the shafts hole.
I then placed the washer into the oem pump body and filled the remaining area w/ some HILTI epoxy.
While the epoxy cured I had placed a small BMW emblem over the epoxied hole but when it did fully cure it swelled
pushing the emblem up.(thats why it looks the way it does.) I still have to clean it up the remaining epoxy.

Tomorrow april 17th @ 630am I go in for ACL operation so until I am
back on my feet, this project will be on hold.

DAVIES CRAIGE EWP80

DAVIES CRAIGE EWP80 INSTALLATION
I couldnt sit still knowing the ewp80 kit was in the garage just teasing me.
 So I took off bandages and wrapped my knee not so bulky and got to work.
It took a little while due to not being able to bend my right leg.

I just finished my installation of the DAVIES CRAIGE EWP80. w/controller .

START
1- remove thermostat housing and water pump.
1a- remove thermostat from housing & reinstall housing.

2- [I gutted my oem water pump, then took the body & cut it down
on both sides the inner and outer part.
**do not cut the inner side to close to the o-rigs groove**
I cut mine to my own personal length. (u can cut yours or leave it a lone)

2a-Then I took a steel washer and welded the hole closed, put it down in to the
body sitting flat , then filled the body with epoxy (I used HILTI BRAND) let it cure
put a new o-ring on and install.

3- The m42 motors lower radiator hose is shaped in such a way that the ewp80 pretty much just drops in.
3a- cut the upper radiator hose so the ewp80 temp sensor is just after thermostat housing.

4- *Dont forget* you need a shorter belt for the motor to alt.

THE FAN
5- I had a relay so just copied the fan wiring diagram that came with the kit,

6- Run the wires from engine bay into the cab, hook up as Davies Craige paper work says and your done.
FINISHED



I have only driven the car around a little bit to make sure the temp would be ok and so far so good.
I have not adjusted the setting on the controller at all.

1st thing I noticed was that the car was quieter the idle sounded lower and smoother.
When I checked the gauges the idle was exactly where it always is.

The car took a bit longer to come up to normal temp,
(my temp gauges "normal" is just to the left of the middle line)
when it did reach its normal it stayed in between my old mechanical pumps normal temp
& the middle line and never moved up or down after that.

I mounted a gopro camera to the front of my 318is before the Davies Craige ewp80 was installed .
Ill get video with the system now that is installed and post asap.

I cant give an honest opinion of the unit yet because its only been on for one drive.
in a day or so Ill report back what changes good or bad that I notice.

As for the install it was very basic.4/10
WIRING
I honestly suck when it comes to wiring and I did it, relay wiring for the fan and all,
it all works perfect so far.

Ive driven the car a bit more & this is my opinion.
 
I started w/ a stock 91 bmw 318is.
1st mod - a/c delete, I did this mod cause the m42 motor is a great motor but its only a 4cyl
and using the a/c on say a hill climb just kills its power.
       *  impression - motor was just happier.

2nd mod - mechanical fan & fan clutch delete.
     * impression - the motor was free'r and got up on the power a lil quicker
and the power seemed more usable. passing etc.

3rd mod - Water pump/thermostat delete

 If you've done a mechanical fan/clutch delete, remember the freedom
the engine seemed to feel it gained? doing this ewp80 kit
was exactly that same feeling in the engine x2 but more so in every way.
 The engine is quieter , smoother and gets to 4500rpm way quicker & w/
little effort or strain.

As for power increase its not that you notice a big increase in hp, its that it
feels more usable, and easier to use when u need it.
 So far I love it, I had one issue with the pump leaking but I took it back off and put a bit of
red rtv on the o-ring & (its all i had)groove and its all good.

    I love this thing! Why not many if any have done this mod is crazy to me.
   once your right foot feels the difference you will think "why didnt I do this before"..
  I really suck @ doing any wiring but I was able to copy the diagram
for the fan/relay curcuit and when I turned the car on it all works flawlessly!

  MPG - I havent driven the car far enough to see what type of difference the cars
mpg will be but as soon as I fill it up Ill report in.

     
      if you have ever picked up a child, and run with, then without the kid,
the BMW feels just like that to me. very little power increase but more usable power.

     this was the best $374 I have spent on this car yet!

the kit was very easy to install. No additional hoses were needed
nothing special or custom.
the water pump hole you will have to plug some how, i cut my  oem water pump way down on both inner and outer sides.
the inner i cut completely off up to the o-ring grove.
the outer i cut as far as I could , put a plug(washer w/o hole)
and fill with epoxy.. let cure and install w/ new o-ring.

Great mod. I am planing to do it myself but for now I have other priorities.

Regarding the original water pump I would just remove the impeller and put it back for stock appereance and the original belt to fit.

I have some concerns regarding the removal of the thermostat, I'll come back with details, I'm in a hurry right now.

I dont think you should use any part of the oem pump.
the whole point of the mod is to ease the motors efforts.
Any thing the motor has to do other than just run is parasitic loss.
(turning  pumps, and or just turning pulleys connected to nothing is still parasitic.
 Leaving any part of the pump in the hole is not giving the
new ewp free passages to push water through.
That just my opinion. Do what you feel you need to do. The way I did mine was
I gutted mine and filled the body of the pump with a plug and epoxy.
works just fine.

and the thermostat I removed it because the company Davies Craig said to.

You will need to get a booster pump so the heater will work.

I just found that out the other night when it was cold out side & no heat came out of the vents.


Im 99.9% overly happy with the ewp80 kit, but I do and you will also be buying a booster
pump so we dont freeze.
