ticking noise trust me this one is different
« on: March 24, 2013, 01:22:27 PM »
Hello everyone, I have had my 318is for a little over 8 years now for the majority of that time I have been on R3Vlimited. Since I have owned it I have loved my car but the time has come to finally get to the bottom of where this damn ticking noise is coming from the top end of the motor.

I have replaced everything that could be associated with engine tick, timing chain, timing chain sprockets, timing chain tensioner, timing chain rails, and all 16 lifters (incase anyone is curious no they are not cheap). Now my motor runs silent up to a point. If the vehicle is driven on the highway or engine speed is sustained about 2,500 rpms for more than a minute or two it will start ticking, and then after driving around back roads for 2-3 minutes it will go silent again.

It will also tick if I have gone for a long drive, and when I shut it off then start it within 30 minutes it will tick, if I wait more than an hour to restart there is no ticking.

And please I am not going to just deal with the noise after spending as much as I have to fix this issue I will get it sorted even if it bankrupts me. I just need an idea where to go next.

M42club I come needing your expertise, as to my next step.

tried everything from 5w-30 10w-30 10w-40, up to 15w-50. no change with any of them in terms of engine noise.

Have you checked the bolts from the oil pump?  See if they are loose or in the lower oil pan?

I have a ticking in the top end as well and a buddy of mine seems to think it could be an injector... not sure but he's usually pretty good.
