Transmission Rattle
« on: December 08, 2012, 12:50:47 AM »
Greetings,

Heard a very strange noise coming from my transmission the other night. It's hard to describe but it sounds like a metallic rattle coming from the transmission near the shifter. Only happens at the top of 2nd and throughout 3rd gear. Shifts smoothly and only happens while under load. The shifter is not shaking. The more i accelerate the louder it gets. I haven't the slightest clue on what it could be. Has anybody else experienced this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

the very first thing you want to do is make sure the tranny has the proper amount and type of lubricant in it.   These can get a couple of different types of fluid ,  and the only way I know of for sure is to look on the tranny for a yellow label. it should state what type.  If no label,  maybe your original owners manual would have it.  The correct fluid and level is important, especially as it gets colder.  The reason I suspect fluid level is because you have noise in more than 1 gear.

Geoff,
Thanks for the advice, I checked the trans fluid and it seemed to be within the suggested levels. While I was under the car I checked the guibo and it showed some wear but to me it didn't look like it needed immediate replacement. Didn't know if this could be a possible symptom of a failing guibo or not. Your thoughts?
